Bad traits should be included I agree, as for how many generations should be allowed it should depend on the growth time of each plants and if it's kept in a greenhouse or not. You could get around 4 generations with a greenhouse and 2 outside depending on which biome you'd be in.
Side note: perhaps when these crops generate they'll have different genetics in a cluster, you could have something like 3 differentials per biome of the same crop.
Alright I heard it was C originally but a friend told me that it's mostly coded with Java. It should be possible then, lots of C or C++ applications can support DLSS.
What I'm suggesting is randomized trait system which picks from something like 5 traits which you can mix and combine. Example: color, size, shape, hardiness, production etc
You could crossbreed each to get what outcome you want.
This tree style is also cool, looks simpler to implement and it fixes the weird underneath log issue found in most block games.

Imagine including similar generation but with thicker logs and branches. People could still make log cabins and such but the trees would overall look better and it would also fix the bare log branch eyesore found in any Minecraft like game.
Perhaps they can can drop ectoplasm for something you can craft or represent an extension to the lore of the game. Maybe they can lead you to other structures like hidden treasure or something if you do a quest for them.
I wonder if it could work in the way the clay making system works but with your own array of colors. It would also be interesting if there could be a way to mass produce these designs too so it's not too tedious.
