If I remember correctly, in the mouse over for this option, it says that cold biomes are more to the north and warmer biomes more to the south. I can't verify it at the moment though.

I think a world needs to be newly created, for world generation changes to take effect. -
Upon world creation there is an option for realistic and patchy climate zones.

How is the soilage of cooked food calculated? Does it make a difference when you use fresh food (e.g. fresh for 50 days) vs not fresh food (e.g. fresh for 5 days)?

In my current World I had the same Problem with finding Limestone. But the more I looked around the more I discovered it. It was No 1000 block away from my house peeking out of multiple mountain sides. Also half of the caves I explored were filled with Limestone.

Kalkstein findet man auch oft in Höhlen. Ungefähr die Hälfte aller Höhlen die ich bisher erkundet habe hatten diverse Gänge aus Kalkstein.
