	Two major events will occur in the nearest future: The stable release of Version 1.9, the biggest update ever, and launch of the marketing campaign to let the world know this game exists. And then, maybe, just maybe I finally no longer need to drive myself into financial ruin by developing VS <img alt=":D" data-emoticon="" height="20" src="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/biggrin.png" srcset="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/biggrin@2x.png 2x" title=":D" width="20" /></p>

<p>
	I will be contacting several hundred YouTubers to whom I believe this game could be really interesting to play as well as contacting all major press outlets that I believe would be interested in covering Vintage Story. We'll be shooting for the moon... I only hope our chance of hitting is more than 0% <img alt="^_^" data-emoticon="" height="20" src="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/happy.png" srcset="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/happy@2x.png 2x" title="^_^" width="20" /></p>

<p>
	<strong>Game price</strong><br />
	I've decided that upon release of v1.9 stable I will raise the price of VS to 15 Eur/17 USD. I'd like to believe the amount of content VS now offers justifies that. Furthermore, from what I've seen, in comparison to other games in the genre, such price is still below average.<br />

	<strong>Dear fellow Followers,</strong>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;">
	<img alt="0-heldlantern.png.bec60fbf250f504969175ed46ba9bb28.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed ipsAttachLink_image ipsAttachLink_right" data-fileid="2063" data-ratio="146.60" style="width:200px;height:auto;float:right;" width="309" src="//media.vintagestory.at/monthly_2019_04/0-heldlantern.png.bec60fbf250f504969175ed46ba9bb28.png" />I should probably post a bit more often here.<br /><br />
	The Development of the game is still (almost) as active as ever with some small short breaks here and there. Purely due to convenience I have been posting most updates on our official discord chat server. There are even some pre-release versions of v1.9 available for download.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;">
	What I also posted there was a small brain snapshot: As much as I want to complete v1.9 as soon as possible myself and it bugs me immensely that the update takes so long, no crunch time was able to remedy that, and only burned me out in the end. So I took a 2 day break and continue at a normal pace again, which means v1.9 will come out "when its done". There's some things where I can't just take shortcuts without compromising the overall quality of the experience. It'll have to take as long as it takes. That being said though, there is very few features left to be added and mostly gameplay balancing and bug fixing remains to be tackled.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;">
	Thanks for your patience,<br />

<p>
	<span style="font-size:16px;"><strong>Great citizens of the earth,</strong></span><br />
	it's been nearly a month since the last update. This is whats up.
</p>

<p>
	We've been hard at work on the next release, which will become version 1.9 - the world generation update. I suspect it will still take another 3 to 6 weeks until the first pre-releases.
</p>

<p>
	With this version we want to focus on 2 major aspects: Get as many planned worldgen updates in as possible and getting the game (more) ready for a major marketing push. Once v1.9 is released and stable enough we will contact media and influencers.
</p>

<p>
	Part of the road to v1.9 included building a web-based <strong>story &amp; asset management tool</strong> for the vintage story gamedev team, as we've been struggling for 2 years to find a suitable tool for the task. As with everything, we don't wait for the right circumstances, we create them. Here's a screenshot of it:
</p>

<p>
	<span style="font-size:12px;">The VSDB. Coded from scratch, in the hopes of being our salvation to the documentation chaos we had before</span><br /><a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="//media.vintagestory.at/monthly_2019_02/0-vsdb.png.b965b8fff5ea40bbbca1bbf6ce8e5e79.png" data-fileid="2033" rel=""><img class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="2033" src="//media.vintagestory.at/monthly_2019_02/0-vsdb.thumb.png.9c243e06630cd1f0dbdad0fa8b894ca5.png" alt="0-vsdb.thumb.png.9c243e06630cd1f0dbdad0fa8b894ca5.png" /></a>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But back to the game itself. I'm very happy how it turning out, so much in fact that I start to quite dislike the current v1.8 release and that makes me really eager to release v1.9 as soon as possible.
</p>

<p>
	Here's a <strong>sneak peek </strong>of the upcoming features.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:18px;"><strong>Some parts that are completed for v1.9</strong></span>
</p>

<ul><li>
		Lot's and lots of user interface polishing, for example the improved hotbar:<br /><img alt="0-hotbar.png.f2761eef726a64199eab8866cce31cba.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="2028" src="//media.vintagestory.at/monthly_2019_02/0-hotbar.png.f2761eef726a64199eab8866cce31cba.png" /><br /><br />
		There are also vastly improved screens when connecting to a server or loading a game world.<br />

	</li>
	<li>
		<strong>Improved shadow quality </strong>(at the cost of somewhat shorter ranges), <strong>improved game performance </strong>due to optimizations in the occlusion culling system and god rays shader. Caveat: Chunk generation may become a tad slower, but should not be very noticeable.<br />

	</li>
	<li>
		<strong>Improved cave systems</strong>: Greater variety, sometimes generates narrow or very low passages. Rarely generates large dome like or ravine like caves, now much less uniform, likes to generate large lava caves, lava now generates with basalt on top<br /><a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://content.invisioncic.com/r268468/monthly_2019_02/2019-02-13_14-29-07.jpg.a4825d85977222eb64ff91ec55a0bbc9.jpg" rel="external nofollow"><img alt="2019-02-13_14-29-07.thumb.jpg.b9797e61375f771b5f3e05a3b2d9c806.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="2029" src="//media.vintagestory.at/monthly_2019_02/2019-02-13_14-29-07.thumb.jpg.b9797e61375f771b5f3e05a3b2d9c806.jpg" style="width:450px;height:auto;" /></a><a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://content.invisioncic.com/r268468/monthly_2019_02/0-flatcave.jpg.8430412a569f18426caafe025bc137f7.jpg" rel="external nofollow"><img alt="0-flatcave.thumb.jpg.cd8a5df8cf7b206cc03551823a1d3770.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="2031" src="//media.vintagestory.at/monthly_2019_02/0-flatcave.thumb.jpg.cd8a5df8cf7b206cc03551823a1d3770.jpg" style="width:450px;height:auto;" /></a><br />

	</li>
	<li>
		<strong>Trader Outposts</strong>: Caravans and small Settlements of Traders ready to outbargain you on your goods and hard earned money. They talk and act with 3 unique personalities.<br /><a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://content.invisioncic.com/r268468/monthly_2019_02/2019-02-16_11-55-39.jpg.57f28ca5372eeba7c105e9302f566425.jpg" rel="external nofollow"><img alt="2019-02-16_11-55-39.thumb.jpg.c891657fb0accf08a65d1a848df06915.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="2030" src="//media.vintagestory.at/monthly_2019_02/2019-02-16_11-55-39.thumb.jpg.c891657fb0accf08a65d1a848df06915.jpg" style="width:500px;height:auto;" /></a><br />

	</li>
	<li>
		Many new worldedit gui additions, making it easier than ever to import and export structures, for example, the magic wand:
		<div class="ipsEmbeddedVideo">
			<div>
				<iframe allowfullscreen="true" frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Xoaarx7nSfU?feature=oembed" width="480"></iframe>
			</div>
		</div>
	</li>
</ul><p>
	<br /><span style="font-size:18px;"><strong>Still Planned for v1.9</strong></span><br />
	Disclaimer: No guarantees on how much we actually can get done.
</p>

<ul><li>
		New and improved rock layer generator that will allow us to have much more dynamic rock layers
	</li>
	<li>
		6-10 new rock types (and maybe a few new tree types)
	</li>
	<li>
		Locust nests
	</li>
	<li>
		New ores and more varied deposit generation
	</li>
	<li>
		Milky quartz crystals in geodes
	</li>
	<li>
		Two-Way Teleporters in Survival mode, which can be activated at high cost and then can be used to teleport to fixed locations in the world
	</li>
	<li>
		More ruins, maybe ruined villages and piles of metal scraps that can be scavenged for useful stuff
	</li>
	<li>
		Configurable world generation
	</li>
	<li>
		Climate bands, in preparation for seasons in v1.10
	</li>
	<li>
		some more plant and animal life
	</li>
	<li>
		more ingame guidance to make the game more intuitive to play
	</li>
	<li>
		...and a bunch more
	</li>
</ul><p>
	<br />
	So I think there's plenty to be excited about, at least I am! Until the next post!
</p>

	This update fixes minor issues for mac os users as well as with the games frame rate and horizon fog.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;">
	Calling out all <strong>Mac OS Users</strong>: I noticed the in-game mouse position seemed to be off by 5 pixels vertically (e.g. a button click event was only registered 5 pixels lower), and some texts were not vertically centered. I have added corrections for this now. Please let me know if this caused any issues for you. <br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;"><span style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;text-align:left;">Game updates</span></span></strong>

	<strong><span style="font-size:16px;">My fellow dedicated Vintarians,</span></strong><br /><span style="color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;"><span style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;text-align:left;">version 1.8.4, a stable release, is now ready for download in the </span><a href="https://account.vintagestory.at/" rel="external nofollow" style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#3d6594;font-size:14px;text-align:left;">account manager</a><span style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;text-align:left;">.</span></span>
</p>

<p>
	In this version I ended up heavily tweaking the color, brightness,contrast and blending of the games ambient, fog and cloud system, as it was still not quite the way I envisioned. It may very well be that some colors are thrown out of balance again, please do let me know if that occurs to you. Other than that I do hope that particularly the blending of far terrain and fog is notably improved as well as the blending of fog against the sky. The fog near the horizon no longer follows a flat line but is wavy and in motion, albeit very subtly (see below screenshot). Let's see how that feels during gameplay.<br /><br />
	Version 1.8.4 should also be the first version that finally works for MacOS, sorry about that &gt;.&gt;<br /><br />
	As always, your feedback and bug reports are invaluable to the development of the game, thank you so much for your continuous diligence in playing and testing the Vintage Story <img src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/twitter/twemoji@14.0.2/assets/72x72/2764.png" class="ipsEmoji" alt="❤️"><br /><br />
	[Edit:] Uploaded v1.8.5 to fix a server startup issue.<br /><br /><a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" data-fileid="1988" href="//media.vintagestory.at/monthly_2019_01/2019-01-08_16-14-00.jpg.6c7c2a1538086ba4cdf41fcf48497a5c.jpg" rel=""><img alt="2019-01-08_16-14-00.thumb.jpg.a5524d054c1e336e0dd7dccbffcf60e2.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="1988" src="//media.vintagestory.at/monthly_2019_01/2019-01-08_16-14-00.thumb.jpg.a5524d054c1e336e0dd7dccbffcf60e2.jpg" /></a>

<p>
	<br /><strong>Game updates</strong>
</p>

<ul><li>
		Feature: ModMaker.exe now ships with the game. This small tool detects any .json file that you may have modified in your assets folder and creates a mod from those changes. This way, if you install an update of VS, those changes are not lost.
	</li>
	<li>
		Tweak: Tweaked color, contrast, brightness, etc. for the ingame fog, sky, ambient and cloud system
	</li>
	<li>
		Fixed: MacOS version still crashing <img alt="-_-" data-emoticon="" height="20" src="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/sleep.png" srcset="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/sleep@2x.png 2x" title="-_-" width="20" /></li>
	<li>
		Fixed: Water ambient not applied when inside underwater reeds or seaweed
	</li>
	<li>
		Fixed: Vertical scrolling in the handbook not working correctly
	</li>
	<li>
		Fixed: Some non-standard GUI scale issues. Particularly the settings screen should behave nicer at different gui scales.
	</li>
	<li>
		Fixed: A client thread crash did not exit the game as it should
	</li>

Make a backup of your old world before updated. Also remember to apply the <a href="https://wiki.vintagestory.at/index.php?title=Updating_Old_Worlds" rel="external nofollow">remappings</a>.</span></span><br /><br />
	Originally I wanted to work on world generation related features, but decided to shove in an update to improve the overall user experience of the game. One of the most requested UX feature by you, the community, was to have some way of looking up crafting recipes in-game, the ability to do multiplayer more easily and a left hand slot for light sources. Furthermore, over the months we have accumulated quite a list of major issues on the mac OS version, most of which are caused by 3rd party libraries. Principal rich text support was another feature that I believe will greatly improve the user experience in the long term. All of these points, and more, have been addressed in version 1.8.<br /><br /><strong>[Edit:] </strong>Released rc.2 to fix the cooking crash and players able to continue walking after they died.<br /><strong>[Edit:] </strong>Released rc.3 to fix the the game not launching on linux .<br /><br /><strong>The mod api</strong><br />
	Amongst a bunch of mod api updates, I also dropped the code obfuscation for another 40.000 lines of engine code, which should give modders another edge of power and control over the game engine. This means from a grand total of ~240.000 lines of code that are compiled for each release
</p>

<ul><li style="background-color:rgb(255,255,255);color:rgb(53,60,65);font-size:14px;text-align:left;">
		140.000 lines of code are under a readable source license and on github (<a href="https://github.com/anegostudios/vsapi" rel="external nofollow">vsapi</a>, <a href="https://github.com/anegostudios/vsessentialsmod" rel="external nofollow">vsessentialsmod</a>, <a href="https://github.com/anegostudios/vssurvivalmod" rel="external nofollow">vssurvivalmod</a>) for everyone to take a peek
	</li>
	<li style="background-color:rgb(255,255,255);color:rgb(53,60,65);font-size:14px;text-align:left;">
		47.000 lines of code are not obfuscated, meaning with an off-the-shelf decompiler you can look at the code, albeit without code comments
	</li>
	<li style="background-color:rgb(255,255,255);color:rgb(53,60,65);font-size:14px;text-align:left;">
		50.000 lines of code remain obfuscated, at least half of which I still plan to drop the obfuscation for<br />

	</li>
</ul><p>
	<strong>No time to loose</strong><br />
	As always, this update took way longer than what I would have hoped for. The improved macOS support alone about 30 hours of my time. Nevertheless, I did and always will continue to strive to bring you new updates as fast as possible, while still ensuring that I can also do so in the long term. As hinted in the last updates my wife Saraty and I are currently forced to prioritize our health issues over everything else, of which there are bunch.... not counting our other adult responsibilities of ensuring a livable income and raising a child. Le sigh.<br /><br /><strong>Screenshots</strong>
</p>

<p>
	Butterflies now spawn in the world<br /><img alt="0-butterfly.gif.c33392323bad9862aa9446b139add74f.gif" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="1946" src="//media.vintagestory.at/monthly_2018_12/0-butterfly.gif.c33392323bad9862aa9446b139add74f.gif" /></p>

	All creatures now have a death animation and linger around. Drops need to be harvested from their dead bodies. Unharvested dead animals will decay to bones after 3 days, bones decay after another 3.<br /><img alt="0-boarharvest-comp.gif.74f28b6aad3c32a030a4f429759ada29.gif" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="1947" src="//media.vintagestory.at/monthly_2018_12/0-boarharvest-comp.gif.74f28b6aad3c32a030a4f429759ada29.gif" /><br /><br />

		Tweak: copygirls floaty gui tweaks
		<ul><li>
				   Floaty GUIs have been re-positioned a little to show up closer to the center of the block.
			</li>
			<li>
				   Holding Ctrl to move the view while block dialogs are open has been removed, but replaced with the ability to hold Alt while in mouse-look to get the cursor back temporarily
			</li>
			<li>
				   This works well with the new GUI Mouse Lock setting which you can find under "Interface" just below Floaty GUIs. Having both enabled allows you to open in-world block GUIs like containers, fire pits and the quern, without the game taking away your character's camera controls. You can then move items between dialogs using your crosshairs or use the previously mentioned Alt key method which is the only way interact with your hotbar and inventory with the new settings on, currently.
			</li>
			<li>
				   Sneaking while a dialog is opened is now possible again to allow for sneak-interactions with held blocks / items.
			</li>
			<li>
				   Opening a dialog doesn't suddenly stop you from walking around<br />

			</li>

<p>
	Dear Community,
</p>

<p>
	I would like to provide you with an update on what has been happening so far and where Vintage Story is currently standing.
</p>

<p>
	Saraty and me have been having a number of hardships so we've been feeling pretty drained the last dozen days and could only get very little done on the game. Yet as always, our plans remain unchanged. We hope that in a few days we will be able to go back to a decent level of productivity and resume work on version 1.8.
</p>

<p>
	The upcoming update will focus on making some parts of the game feel more complete. It contains a lot of stability improvements for MacOS users, an ingame recipe lookup (comparable to minecrafts JEI/NEI mods), support for rich text in some selective areas and a few pretties <img src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/twitter/twemoji@14.0.2/assets/72x72/1f609.png" class="ipsEmoji" alt="😉"><br /><br />
	Sneak preview of the ingame recipe book:<br /><img alt="0-jei.png.65e09bd0c1b27b0c79f13bdb58fbe8a3.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="1913" src="//media.vintagestory.at/monthly_2018_11/0-jei.png.65e09bd0c1b27b0c79f13bdb58fbe8a3.png" /></p>

<p>
	<br />
	Anyhow, we hope that we can release version 1.8 and then focus on the promised world gen changes and hopefully also some progress on mechanical power. Until then we wish you happy gaming!
</p>

<p>
	- Tyron

<p>
	In case you haven't noticed, the websites front page now shows off our brand new trailer that we uploaded 2 days ago. It took 2.5 weeks of some seriously hard work, particularly because trailer making is not something that I enjoy doing all that much. <br /><br />
	But I'll keep this short - enjoy the new face of Vintage Story! <img alt="^_^" data-emoticon="" height="20" src="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/happy.png" srcset="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/happy@2x.png 2x" title="^_^" width="20" /></p>

	<span style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;">Version 1.7.6, a stable release,<span> </span>is now ready for download in the </span><a href="https://account.vintagestory.at/" rel="external nofollow" style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#3d6594;font-size:14px;text-align:left;">account manager</a><span style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;">.<span> </span></span>
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;">
	<span style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;"><span>This version should fix a number of uncommon crashes and hopefully fix the missing grid for knapping and clay form on MacOS. It also improves the multiplayer experience in various ways. Please note, for multiplayer both sides need to be on v1.7.6 as this version is not backwards compatible, networking wise. <br /><br />
	[Edit:] Released v1.7.7 to fix players getting kicked from SMP servers when trying to open the worldmap</span></span><br /><span style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;"><span>[Edit2:] Released v1.7.8 to fix crafting recipes all wonky and broken <img alt="-_-" data-emoticon="" height="20" src="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/sleep.png" srcset="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/sleep@2x.png 2x" title="-_-" width="20" /></span></span><br /><br /><span style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;">In other news Saraty and me are hard at work on a new trailer that includes all the recent additions, as our current trailer is sorely outdated by now. You won't believe how much time doing just that really takes <img alt=":D" data-emoticon="" height="20" src="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/biggrin.png" srcset="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/biggrin@2x.png 2x" title=":D" width="20" /><br />
	Some &gt;30% of the time I spent fixing bugs and smoothing out rough edges so that they do not show up in the trailer, which allowed us to do multiplayer scenes with cinematic camera flyovers that look good. We're over half way done by now and its shaping up to be a great trailer. Can't wait to share it with everyone. Here's some semi-related screenshots <br /><br />

	<span style="background-color:rgb(255,255,255);text-align:left;">Thanks to the work of some lovely folk in our community the game now officially ships with italian translations. Some areas of the game do not have translation support just yet, but we are continuously working on improving that. If you want to help translate the game into your language, you are more than welcome to <a href="https://vintagestory.oneskyapp.com/" rel="external nofollow">contribute on our translation center</a>!</span>

<p>
	As always this version ships with the usual accumulation of bugfixes. Please note, version 1.7.4 does not let you connect to servers of version 1.7.3 or lower and may be a little less stable than 1.7.3.<br /><br />

<p style="color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;">
	This update comes we a new graphics option called "Occlusion culling", but it's disabled by default as its somewhat experimental. Please do enable it and tell me how your FPS is in the forum please! It has the chance to drastically improve FPS for some players and may worsen it for others, so I'm looking for feedback on how well it performs on a multitude of graphics cards.
</p>

<p style="color:#353c41;font-size:14px;text-align:left;">
	<strong>Occlusion Culling - Technical Info</strong><br /><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidden_surface_determination" rel="external nofollow">Occlusion culling</a> is a method to determine which parts of the scene are invisible and thus do not need to be drawn, saving on extra computation time on the graphics card. The challenge is however that occlusion culling itself is computationally expensive and has to be carefully programmed in order to actually gain something from it. In our case we are trading in cpu computation for gpu computation. I implemented my own custom flavor of a ray casting system that currently shoots out 2 rays for each chunk on every chunk at the edge of the view distance, any chunk it can pass through will be marked visible, all other chunks are marked invisible. The idea is based on <a href="https://tomcc.github.io/2014/08/31/visibility-1.html" rel="external nofollow">Tommos Cave Culling Algorithm</a> but instead of doing a breadth-first searching I am actually doing full ray casts. I did try the Bfs method and it seemed to doing a very underwhelming job, but understandably so, since a Bfs does not really model the physical properties of light transport. Tommo claims it would require 119 000 ray casts for a view distance of, I presume 16 minecraft chunks, which is 256 meters. I seem to be able to do it in about 2 300 ray casts for a view distance of 320 meters, so that's pretty freaking nice. Sorry, I'm totally nerding out about this now <img alt=":D" data-emoticon="" height="20" src="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/biggrin.png" srcset="//media.vintagestory.at/emoticons/biggrin@2x.png 2x" title=":D" width="20" /> <br />
	Let's hope it actually works for everyone.
