how do you put a beehive on the ground?

Holding the control key while scrolling will let you move your selection to your backpack menu. You select the beehive, then place it down like you would a chest.

You can also select the bag slots directly by pressing sprint (by default "ctrl") + 1 or 2 or 3 or 4.
