Hello, me and my friend are encountering an issue when playing on a dedicated server. I launch the server and things go just fine for a period of time, we play and log off for the night. The next morning when my friend tries to get on the server, they are unable to. They are met with an error message "A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connection host has failed to respond."

The error message in question.

I restart the server, and things work fine again. We would like to find a fix for this because there are times when I am not able to restart the server for my friend to connect.

Additional Helpful Details (the reason we're stumped):

  • I am running the server on the same machine I am playing the game from when I join. This machine has a 4.7ghz CPU and 64GB of RAM.

  • The port 42420 is open on my router.

  • Between restarts, my local IP remains the same, as does my external IP (the one my friend is using to connect). I also have UPNP enabled.

  • The app and the game are allowed through my firewall.

  • We have tried with different mod configurations; we have ruled mods out.

  • We make a backup of the server save every time we log off for the night using the /genbackup command. This process completes as normal every time, as the chat log indicates that the server has been backed up each time.

I and my friend have the same issue without a dedicated server, only when I open my game up first to LAN and then to allow internet connections for my friend to join, they have never been able to join.

Our group has been having the same issue with a non dedicated server, we've also ruled out mods as the cause for this.  It's like if the server has been open for more than ten minutes then it becomes unjoinable.  Hoping that this one gets looked at because it's made it really annoying to have to restart every time someone wants to join :(

Still an issue. As said in the post above, if the server is open for 10+ minutes then it cannot be joined by anyone unless the host restarts the server. Not a big issue but definitely annoying after some time.

Literally came here looking for a solution. Running a dedicated server on my windows machine, everything works fine on startup. Just 1-2 hours later nobody can connect to the server anymore. Restarting the server fixes the issue. There are no errors in the terminal for the entire time.

I don't know if this is relevant, but the server stays empty for some period, with just periodical game saving happening in the terminal. It's weird why saving needs to be done if the calendar is frozen and the world is empty but oh well.

it must suck being able to play with friends one minute, and the next minute having issues!, the thing that came to mind for me was lan sleep time, something to check or double check :)

Go to Device Manager > Network Adapter > Properties > Power Management and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

just an idea to check and try.

Good idea, tried it, didn't change anything. Surely if the network card was asleep I'd have no internet altogether, but thats not what is happening. It seems that the dedicated server that ships with the game for windows just straight up stops accepting connections. First game I've encountered that does this.

Found the fix, posting for others in the future that run into this.

You need to portforward 42420 (the default server port) to your host machine (I did both TCP and UDP). It seems Upnp, which is what lets you host without portforwading, stops working on the server after about 10-15 minutes, for whatever reason.

After i doing that my vintage story server is saying that there's no UPnP now, changing the port(for like 42421) is enabling back the UPnP again...
I have no idea how to fix that and i was trying to solve this for few hours now

Heya! You might've solved it anyway, but for people who might struggle in the future I will leave this here:
So what you need to also do is disable upnp on the server using the server command

/serverconfig upnp 0

So do this after you do

Just open port is not enaught, you need to manage port forwarding.
