Dynamic Paths and Tracks: Trampled Terrain

Hi everyone,

I’ve been thinking about a feature that I believe would fit really well into the immersive and detail-rich world of Vintage Story.

Picture this:

You're walking through a field of tall grass. As you pass, the grass gets pressed down under your feet, leaving a trail behind you. If you keep using the same route day after day, the grass no longer regrows, and a dirt path slowly forms—just from repeated use.

Or maybe you're tracking a deer. You spot a faint trail through the underbrush and decide to follow it—only to discover it's not a deer, but a bear that left the path through the trampled grass.

This system could work for both players and animals:

  • Temporarily trampled vegetation that slowly regrows over time.

  • Permanent paths are formed through frequent travel.

  • Subtle animal trails allow players to track wildlife naturally by observing the environment, not through GUI elements.

I’m not sure if this already exists in a mod (please let me know if it does!), but if not, maybe this could be an idea for a future game feature—or inspiration for a modder out there.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

—Michael
