Why do my Pit Kilns keep going out?

I have my pit kilns under this layer of sand surrounded by more sand. Yet they go out all the time. I've fully covered the top in the hope they won't but still for no reason I can see they go out and I can't fire my clay.

I think there has to be a block of air above the pit kiln for it to work. Putting sand down over it looks like it would smother the flame.

When I have pit kilns outside, I usually put a block above the air block above the kiln to keep off rain.

Exactly that what Echo Weaver wrote - its charcoal pit You need to cover up, pit kilns need to burn free - You need to shelter them from rain so it doesnt put the fire out but You need to have at least one block of free space directly above burning pit kiln ;)
