It would be nice if the bone flute played a random song from a set rather than just the one song. Alternatively, it could have two modes accessed by pressing 'f'. Having two modes makes more sense because the one song is for calling your mount.

Having a fully playable flute seems out of scope but would be cool as well.

Playable flute wouldn't be particularly hard to implement. I can see someone taking it on as a bit of a distraction from some major main task.

Sometimes, "scope creep" isn't a bad thing, if it helps your team not to burn out. We often had game jams where people can work on whatever they want for a week at several studios I've worked at, because you get some really fun ideas that way, and devs usually end up rather recharged as a result. This is particularly great for sandbox style games, because a lot of these experiments can become real features.
