Is bamboo sustainable? Do bamboo shoots destroy surrounding saplings?

I planted a ton of bamboo saplings and didn't get nearly as many back when shearing, I have a theory that the bamboo shoots that spawn around the plant destroyed some of the saplings near them as I planted them all in a big clump, I will do some tests to confirm my theory.

I haven't played in warmer climates lately but last time I did, bamboo was very sustainable.

I planted huge fields of it.

It's such a great material and so easy to harvest.
