How do mods work in multiplayer?

I would like to join a server, but most of them have mods that I don't want in my singleplayer game. If I join a server, will it create a separate instance, or will the mods be installed globally? Is the installation process automatic?

When you connect to the server, you will be prompted to download its mods. Downloaded mods go in a folder that is only used for the server.

Server-side mods that you have installed in your regular mods folder will also be loaded when you play on the server.
