grravity Posted January 14 Report Posted January 14 I just started playing vintage story and have been having an incredible time, I'm about 60 hours into my modded nomap playthrough using the cartography mod. This game is seriously beautiful, it's so easy to get lost walking around looking at mountains and picking flowers. Especially with nomap, and the river mod, I haven't felt this immersed in a game in forever. Something about this game that kinda surprised me was just how scary this game is, the enemies are horrifying without even trying. I think some kind of sub-aquatic content could be incredibly interesting and it would fit with the steam-punk/eldrich horror theme. I've always had somewhat of an obsession with water, the deeper the better, I made one of my first houses in minecraft under water and it took me forever. Ever since I played subnautica for the first time I thought "This is the genre we've been waiting for, this is so scary and cool" and I imagined there would be minecraft modpacks made that would build on the concept. Many were released and I truly tried them all, but it always just felt boring on a fundamental level, the water wasn't deep, the monsters weren't scary, it didn't feel like an alien world. Subnautica's base building was incredibly cool to me but It never felt like you were free to build whatever you wanted, there was little room for creativity because of the number of premade building pieces. No man's sky also tried making under-water content but faced the same problems minecraft did, the water was shallow and empty. I've tried a lot of games trying to scratch this sub-aquatic eldrich horror craving . The abyss from terraria calamity mod, the city from bioshock, iron lung, Biolum VR, I think Vintage Story is uniquely perfect for this highly specific genre, it would be an incredible gameplay experience. There is a mod in development "Abyssal Depths" but it is one of the only aquatic mods in the DB, and it is also a single author who made it for a comission. I would make the mod myself if I knew anything about making mods and am honestly thinking of learning how to mod just to make something. I think introducing a tag for aquatic mods in the DB (or like a competiton?) could be a good start, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for what kind of things would fit this elusive "sub aquatic eldrich horror" idea. ideas for progression: rivers, coral reefs, submerged caves, aquifers, cenotes, Ocean, trench. each of these could have a polar/tropical/normal variant. maybe like, magma tubes and a secret subterranean ocean like in the calamity mod. Also love the idea of different tiers of diving suits/marine vehicles and resources. 6
EmperorPingu Posted January 15 Report Posted January 15 Interesting you mention that mod - I literally just came up with that suit idea a few days ago. Seeing it there is brillient so thank you. I also want an immersive ocean experience and have just been compiling a list of a whole host of critters. I'm hoping to get into modding as well to try and make something happen because I want it - although at this stage I'm probably the same level as you honestly. All the same, here's the list I got so far - there's a mix of freshwater, oceanic, reef, and deep ocean in there. For the ocean stuff I was aiming for "Thallasophobia" - The ocean is scary for a reason >:0 - Seriously though, check out the photos of some of these things Alligator Gar Amazon River Dolphin Barreleye Fish Banded Sea Krait (Sea Snake) Bathynomus Giganteus (Giant Isopod) Beluga Whale Bigfin Squid Blacktip Reef Shark Black Sea Devil (Anglerfish) Blobfish Bootlace Worm Bottlenose Dolphin Box Jellyfish Bluefin Tuna Blue-Ringed Octopus Bluespotted Ribbontail Ray Blue Whale Bull Shark Coconut Crab Cod Colossal Squid Comb Jelly (Ctenophore) Common Bream Common Carp Common Chub Common Cuttlefish Common Octopus Common Roach Common Salp Cone Snail Electric Eel Electric Ray Esox (Pike) Flamboyant Cuttlefish Flounder Flower Urchin Flying Fish Ghost Crab Giant Basket Star Giant Clam Giant Oarfish Giant Octopus Giant Squid Goblin Shark Gray Whale Great White Shark Greenland Shark Hagfish Halibut Hammerhead Shark Hermit Crab Horseshoe Crab Humbolt Squid Humpback Whale King Crab Krill Lamprey Largemouth Bass Lionfish Lion's Mane Jellyfish Lobster Long-Spined Sea Urchin Manatee Manta Ray Mantis Shrimp Marble Trout Marlin Milkfish Mola Mola (Sunfish) Monkfish Moon Jellyfish Moray Eel Mussel Narrownose Chimaera Narwhal Nautilus Nudibranch (Sea slug) Nurse Shark Orca / Killer Whale Parrotfish Pearl Oyster Pelican Eel Perch Plaice Porbeagle Shark Portuguese Man o' War Praya Dubia Predatory Tunicate Purple Sea Urchin Pyrosome Rainbow Trout Red-Bellied Piranha Red Sea Urchin Red Snapper Sailfish Salpa Thompsoni Sardine Sea Apple Sea Cucumber Sea Lily (Feather Star) Sea Spider Skate Smooth Dogfish (Shark) Common Sole Sperm Whale Spider Crab Spiny Dogfish (Shark) Stingray Stonefish Striped Red Mullet Sunflower Sea Star Swordfish Thresher Shark Tiger Prawn Tiger Shark Tiger Trout Tripod Fish Tube Anemone Vampire Squid Viperfish Walleye Wels Catfish Whale Shark Yellow-Bellied Sea Snake Yellowfin Goatfish Yellowfin Tuna 1
-Glue- Posted Friday at 03:33 AM Report Posted Friday at 03:33 AM I agree, I would love more aquatic content. Its not something most people think about, but the more filled out areas like lakes and oceans are in a game, the deeper the world feels. Swimming, or sailing over an ocean, knowing that there is a whole other side of the game to explore underneath you, is such a great feeling. Its like you are actually in a large, living world that exists even without you. Not many games pull it off. I imagine VS will get another big ocean update eventually. It doesn't seem like them to leave such a large content deadzone. But there is definitely more pressing features to get in game first. Personally, I would love some 1900's style diving gear that we can find/craft to explore the oceans. With lots of flora and fauna to find throughout. Unique aquatic ruins, shipwrecks, large coral structures, water themed rust creatures, unique crafting ingredients. Maybe even a story dungeon that takes place in an ocean. Lots of potential! 1

A lot of this could actually be done in a neat, believable way, without some fantasy ruins and contrived lore explanations, because the sea level does not need to have been historically constant. It could serve as a really interesting plot point that the sea levels have increased after certain events, leading to many ruins of the old world (especially larger towns near rivers and oceans) getting submerged underwater. Would require a bunch of changes to world generation to do it well, but I think it's nonetheless a pretty cool possibility.
Monsota Posted Friday at 11:03 PM Report Posted Friday at 11:03 PM I'm imagining having to go from the darkness of the caves to the darkness of the ocean and I'm not sure which is more inescapable. I like this idea for the reason that the implications scare me. This would also give oxygen time a bit more importance if one suddenly has a bit more reason to check it out, in addition to the more natural goodies—is it possible to boil brine water to get a decent amount of salt out of it?
