Byrnorthil Posted May 5 Report Posted May 5 A friend and I spent quite a while trying to get a baby goat into a reed basket trap to no success, despite having baited it with a turnip (which I happen to know goats like from a previous save), and despite the wiki saying goats can be caught in reed basket traps. Well, reading through the wiki page again I noticed something like 80% of the crate trap page was copied directly from the basket trap page and is probably completely inaccurate and/or outdated despite the banner saying "last verified for 1.21.5". Looking through the page history it looks like someone took a crack at updating the page in November and never got around to finishing the job. The handbook says crate traps can catch "larger animals", but adult chickens and rabbits can already be caught in basket traps. So, I can only presume baby goats, pigs, sheep etc. can only be caught in crate traps? Which means domesticating those is pretty difficult before bronze tier.

Baby goats and sheep can be caught in both traps, though crate traps have a significantly higher chance of success (70% > 30%). Baby pigs can only be caught in basket traps, interestingly enough. More generally, the basket trap can catch: chicken, hare, fox (baby), hyena (baby), raccoon (baby), wolf (baby), pudu deer (baby), goat (baby), sheep (baby), pig (baby). And the crate trap can catch: fox (adult), pudu deer (adult), water deer (adult), all deer except pudu (baby), gazelle (baby), goat (baby; higher chance than basket trap), sheep (baby; higher chance than basket trap). That's based on the JSON assets, so it's fully accurate assuming no bugs or other odd behavior. Also, keep in mind that many animals (especially adult animals) can eat the bait from the trap but can't be caught. Edited May 5 by MKMoose

Byrnorthil Posted May 6 Author Report Posted May 6 Hoglets are actually really small, so it does make sense that they wouldn't be able to reach the bait in a crate trap. I was just thinking "pigs are big so use big trap" but had forgotten that fact.
