Nagahiro Posted June 11 Report Posted June 11 just salted fish, dried under the sun or brine cured. that's it pretty sure it's a big thing for many cultures, so I imagine there are other people in this forum that would have already suggested it. for me, personally, I love dried fish. where I live it's a comfort food for those times you don't want to cook anything complicated or balanced. just slap a couple dried sardines on a pan with oil and fry it crazy style. top it on rice and it balances out the saltiness. it takes me back. 1
Facethief Posted June 11 Report Posted June 11 If I’m not mistaken, the cured fish in game may be what you’re looking for? 1
Nagahiro Posted June 11 Author Report Posted June 11 (edited) I wrote this after eating fish for dinner, hopped on my computer, wrote my thoughts and then subsequently opened VS for a bit of gaming, and I checked the handbook lmao. I don't always get to use salt in the game tbf, rarely have I ever found salt, only just last night did I found a salt column on my own. quite wonderful honestly. as a back up idea, how about a drying rack, or two posts to tie fish or meat on, that seems fine honestly. I remember playing on a really small island with the bare minimum to survive, like three trees, copper, bismuth and zinc, dry stone because no mortar, lime from sea shells, and I had to exclusively eat fish and berries, and had literally no way to preserve it. so idk lmao Edited June 11 by Nagahiro clarifications 1
Crimeo Posted June 19 Report Posted June 19 This is already in the game, you put salt in a barrel with fish and it will salt cure. There does desperately need to be a way to make salt from salt water though not just mined salt. 1
Cedric the Silent Posted June 20 Report Posted June 20 It still feels wrong that we can't just take sea water and make sea salt in base game yet, wish I wouldn't need to keep installing mods to do something so basic hopefully it will get added into base game in the future as well as more uses for said salt like for example I heard it can be used to treat bee stings, considering they hinted on adding status effects into the game as part of a new herbalism system I can bee's stings having a possible status effect added and maybe using salt as a way to remove it. Other uses I can think of that I heard about is weed killing or used as a safe repellent for gardens against certain pest such as snails or slugs. If they every add pets like dogs I heard bathing pets in a salt solution gets rid of flees. Another possible use that salt can have in relation of herbalism is as a treatment for poison ivy rashes if they ever choose to add that plant to the game. The last things I can think in my head of added uses of salt outside of cooking they can add would be as a way of removing things like snow or the fact lemon juice plus salt made into a paste can be used to remove rust of some metal. 1
