Is the overtuned cave "darkness" fog a bug or intentional?

I really, really hate this effect/bug. I understand wanting ambiance but I'm a "explore and build and have fun" kind of player and not being able to a) see more than three blocks ahead of me and b) not able to see any of my navigation lighting really takes all the fun out of cave exploration for me. Would be nice to have the option to turn it off.
