Honestly, I wouldn't want to see a skill tree in a game like this. However, I would suggest having a skill system where abilities improve as you perform tasks, similar to games like Ultima Online or Kenshi. This would give players a sense of gradual progress. For example: 0% Woodcutting - no effect, 10% Woodcutting - 2% faster cutting, 20% Woodcutting - 4% faster cutting and 1% chance to gather extra branches or wood. Such a system could provide a small but noticeable sense of development.
As I am new to the game, perhaps such a system already exists or is being considered, but I wanted to share my thoughts regardless.
