If you want to play the game as it was intended just select the default survival mode.

I have tried to play exile and I like it but it is hard. I like that minetest is an engine to make your own games. If I were in charge of luanti as it is now called I would market the game as "This is luanti, it runs on the minetest engine and has a lua api to make your own games. My favorite minetest game is VoxelLibre, which is what Mineclone 2 is now called.
