Balancing around having PassTimeWhenEmpty on?

I run a little server for about six friends, but we have a range of about eight hours, and a some different levels of interest, so nobody is on and playing at the same time altogether. We're restarting with a modded server, and thought it would be good to turn on global time with slower time so nobody gets hobbled by food rotting etc.
Anyone else do this or find a sweet spot yet? Thinking of doing 1/4th default
And is there a better way to change mult than using /time calendarspeedmul as it seems there's some bugs related to fuel?
