How are pit kilns made/used? I've tried using sand, gravel, and hay both to line the bottom and to get to pack the goods with, and none of it gets the "partially filled in" look of the screenshot.

I found the process on the discord server. You place the piece/pieces to fire in a 1x1 pit and then holding grass place that in the hole until you can't any longer, followed by a couple layers of sticks, and finally one layer of firewood.
