If you only need to host a server for your close friends or something like that, using ZeroTier/RadminVPN should just work and save you a lot of hassle (if you have firewall exceptions set correctly) and it's in my opinion safer option, only real caveat being need for your friends to also use Zerotier/RadminVPN.
