Do you know that you can use the chests in the traders' carts for storage? Could be a lot easier to manage than spamming firepits for storage.

Getting the fat for the fur clothing is gonna be difficult though.

Smithing compared to casting takes twice as much fuel and makes you lose hammer durability. I don't really see at all what is supposed to be more efficient about smithing.

I think the point of smithing is to create things that you can't do otherwise, like saws and iron tools.

Do crocks themself even have any spoilage modifier? Compared to a bowl, for eaxmple. Unless it's a sealed one, of course.

The fact that a furniture item gets visual cracks when you left click it to pick it up has confused me when I first started playing, too. They should really change this. haha

Some official implementation of the Carry Capacity mod would be great.

I was actually wondering the same thing as the OP. I've been playing with the short-range mode of the prospick turned off, mainly because it's not a default setting and finding ore seemed to be easy enough for me even without that feature. It does seem like it would be a fun feature though and I was confused as to why it's not on by default. It being an optional feature just makes it feel too much like I would be lowering the difficulty, which I don't want.

Personally, I also love the soil instability and really think that should be turned on by default, too. Soil instability was unironically one of the things that convinced me to buy the game.
