All firewood within 6 blocks of the firepit will be converted to charcoal. 6+1+6 = 13.

If you put the firepit up on top, then obviously all you're going to get is the 6 layers below it. In order to reach more layers, the firepit must be placed inside the cube of firewood, and you must finish building the cube and covering the pit in the grace period after igniting.

Yes, this is impractical. :P But then, charcoal pits of this size are silly to begin with.

Thanks for clearing that up! That makes sense! Yes it was silly. We did it more as a flex than out of practicality

  2. On a server, me and my friend decided to to actually create the stated largest possible charcoal pit which the handbook states is 11x11x11

Unfortunately when we fired it we discovered that the burning only affected 6 blocks deep.

I went to confirm this in creative and made several 11x11x11 woodpiles and burned them and found this effect to be consistent.

Is it actually the case that the maximum size is 11x11x6?

Attached are some pictures of the woodpiles.

  3. Healing effectiveness is reduced by 33% when wearing a piece of plate armor. When combined in a full set this is a 99% reduction, and effectively makes healing impossible wearing it. However I noticed that as armor does not fall off a player on death even re-spawning does not restore your health. Additionally, if you use a command to kill yourself at full health you also re-spawn with about 1/3 HP.

Is this a bug? Or an intentional part of gameplay.

  4. I am aware F1 and F2 Also change movespeed. Regardless:

The Wiki states the server command for Movespeed is /player [Playername] Movespeed and when typing /help or /player [Playername] it does indeed list movespeed as the correct term to use, however i'm having an issue with finding the right Syntax

/Player [PlayerName] movespeed [Integer] does not work and yeilds the error

I believe it no longer dislodges.  However, it also does not qualify as something to close off a room or cellar either.  Which also applies to the "sleek door" which the old doors changed to.  You need to use one of the solid doors that don't have a window in it now.

I think so too, I was unable to find mention of this change in any of the patch notes, a friend speculated it may have been when the new doors were implemented but it doesn't say as much

  6. Wow! I always wanted to do something like Skyblock in VS but with the differing nature of certain resources I couldnt swing it. I love this! I was going to comment that it is not possible to be truly lifelong sustained as you will eventually run out of metal, therefore rocks, therefore no tools. BUT your generator that uses a shovel is revolutionary to that.

    Will definitely try it.

  8. In real life primitive pottery, you quickly learn about something called Temper.
Temper is any non-plastic non water absorbing material. Usually it's ground up old pottery. Because unlike clay it does not expand, it cannot crack or distort as it dries, which means the pottery will dry more evenly, expand and shrink less, and won't crack.

Of course, in Vintage clay dries instantly so I propose for the sake of having some fun stuff that makes a nod to real life that temper can be produced and added to clay to make a faster building, and faster firing clay body.

This is still realistic as greater strength and resistant to thermal shock are both positives of Temper

You can get a treasure map from a certain type of trader. I don't know how much info you want and don't want to spoil it...

The world must have been created in 1.18, OR there are certain things you can do to put it into an existing world (detailed in one of the update posts).

eta: Activate the Treasure Map (I think like a book or a scroll) which places a mark on your map or gives you directions if your worldmap is disabled.

I'll accept that as good enough without delving into too much spoilers. The treasure map, got it, thanks!

  10. I've gotten pretty far in the game so far, made steel, all the machines, good stuff etc. Now I wanna find that Archive. My question is: How?

I'm not looking for a definitive guide that will guarantee me success but more just general info.

What is the expected way to discover it? Is it random chance? Do the treasure maps lead to it? How do I get a treasure map if so? Is there an item that guides you to it?

    Any info is appreciated

I think I know exactly what you mean. Sort of like this in generation, right? If so, 100% agreed. You could find a beautiful place, flat or even slightly bumpy, and then it's almost entirely walled in by steep, flat sided mountains and that makes traversing through or about the area hideously annoying.

Pocket moderating? What are you talking about? So I'm not allowed to state my opinions anywhere—not even on Steam where you apparently stalked me to—because it disagrees with someone else's? Sharing an opinion, even if you don't like it, isn't in any shape or form, "pocket moderation". How is it my fault that you're taking my opinions, which I'm freely allowed to share even if you hate it, as me "trying" to shush you or somehow discrediting you and your experiences? Look, it's a public forum. If someone posts a thread in a public space, expect other people to pop in and state their own opinions, and expect not all of them to reflect whatever it is that you believe/like/dislike/etc etc. Or are you trying to discourage me from talking because of your behavior? Are your publically shared experiences an attempt to discredit MY experiences? No, and I certainly wouldn't accuse you of it if I didn't like what you were saying or because it disagreed with me or my experiences. In fact, nothing I ever even said even remotely implied that my experiences made yours less of an experience. You just took it that way and for absolutely no reason.

No, but reacting to someone initially in the matter that you did, certainly defines being upset. I also never accused you of being a "u mad" troll or that you weren't a real person, what are you even going on about? I didn't even say anything wrong, and in fact, I even agreed about the hill problem. You got so caught up in my explaining why there's a hill problem (and that I found some flat grounds in 1.18?), that you actually convinced yourself that I was (am?) trying to "discourage" you and others from talking about your experiences. I'm sorry that you took it this way, it wasn't even close to any intention. I'm excited about Vintage Story, I love it, and I like to engage in discussions about it—even those that may not align 100% with my own opinions. I didn't come into this thead to shut you or anyone else up about their (terrible) experiences with hills, especially since I actually agree with the problem. I wish you would have just asked me if that was my intention or something, instead of reacting the way you did and doing the things you did, because clearly there has been a massive misunderstanding and this was all not necessary whatsoever.

And might I just add; I've never seen someone stalk another person to another platform and complain about them sharing their opinions before on a different platform. Talk about creepy behavior. And yet despite this, you expect me to not believe that you were upset earlier? It sounds more like you have a problem with me in general, not that I actually did anything wrong here or to you, and you've used this thread as an excuse to act on it. I don't even know what to say about this all. It's such an overaction to a harmless comment... lesson learned though. Block and enable privacy mode, because someone angry about your game opinions will, no doubt, stalk you across sites.

Unfortunately it's far worse, when I say tight waves of mountains I mean like this. This is really really nasty to travel through because it's too thick to mine through and too far apart to bridge past. The world is mostly wide flat areas surrounded on all sides by walls of these mountains and ravines that go for hundreds or sometimes even over 1000 blocks.

Combine these slow slogs to travel over that you can't really prospect effectively with a bear randomly punching through iron chainmail and an iron shield  in 3 hits and exploration is dead on arrival.

I hate to be a naysayer, this update is really great but this world gen imo just has to change.

  12. Personally I have found the world I generated at random pretty bad in terms of mountains. I like the idea of mountain ranges but it seems often that every little area of flat grass is surrounded by enormous tight waves of mountains that shoot up to the build limit and then plumet straight down to like y level 100 abd then straight back up. It makes exploration in those environments really nasty

  13. You know I realized that Lignite, Borax, Sulfur and the like all spawn in Sedimentary Ore more often and this whole area is mostly metamorphic and igneous rock types so I realized traveling south to a more claystone area allowed to find those in better quantities.

Aaah the age old adage of travel moar...

  14. When new players seek out copper, the two options they have are to either:
Locate 40 Copper Nuggets via Panning and at least one surface deposit to come back to (20 for the Pick, 20 for the Hammer to process the ore) or
Pan 60 Nuggets (20 for Pick, 20 for Hammer, and 20 For a Prospecting Pick as you do not know where any copper ore is)

My idea is to allow the player to use the large clusters of rocks that sometimes spawn to produce a very crude hammer which is capable of crushing ore into nuggets or harvesting stone and ore at greatly reduced efficiency and at a higher time cost in making multiples of the tool due to low durability and its slow mining speed.

The reason I believe this could be a good addition is that it provides a player who might be having trouble finding large amounts of surface deposits to reach the required 40 nuggets the option to be more proactive and source a tool that will allow them to take advantage of the minimal copper they have discovered.

I do not feel this is imbalanced or unfair as in exchange for insulating the player from bad luck it demands more thought, time, and action to get to the end goal (The Ability to prospect and mine ores)

Please feel free to comment on whether you think this is a good or bad idea or what could be changed.

  15. It's a pretty common staple I'd say of these forums for new players to come complaining of the difficulty finding Cassiterite/Tin, but I've noticed suddenly having the exact opposite problem. There's way too much of the stuff! 😱

With the new update and changes to world generation though I've found suddenly just about one in 5 spots I prospect is not only containing Cassiterite but is likely to be Decent, High or Ultra High. I used to have to search long and hard for a good chunk with it but now I can't seem to get away. In a radius of around 3000-6000 blocks around spawn in all directions I've found an honestly shocking amount of it. To the point it's become something of a running joke. Within that bubble (as well as several straight offshoots that go out farther than that) I have located no less than 17 High to Ultra High Cassiterite spots.

Here you can see only spots that are rates as "High or Ultra High" marked in red (Copper is Blue)

I understand some of these are close enough they are the same "Motherlode" but many are not and have spots of 0 Cassiterite between them

Did the Ore generation actually change? I know the default answer to this oddity is simply that the map is an outlier but no matter how much travel I do it seems to be everywhere.

  16. Not to accuse you personally but Zinc is kinda legendary in how hard it is to spot even if you do find it and arent looking right at it and reading it. Assuming that inst the case I also recommend going into another save and in creative mode use the eraser tool with a wide size to "replace with air" and remove all the stone and soil in an area with similar readings to get an idea of what they actually look like.

Frustratingly you may find that even poor readings seem absolutely flush with ore, but when not cheating it can be a major pain to find it. In truth when you find stuff like copper you're really just playing a numbers game with better odds. Theres TONS of copper discs in a single 4x4 chunk area and you usually just find one or two in a cursory search

so yeah... can be a challenge

I changed my Zinc texture to something more obvious to help as well but again that assumes you might have missed some ore

    2) meteoric iron lookup - it is much easier to look for meteoric on the map during winter. And consequent digging it.

Why is that? Id be curious to know what to look for in that regard. I usually only find Meteoric Iron by coincidence.

Also to answer the OP I 100% recommend building a gigaroad south a few thousand blocks (or just run it normal) and having a summer home. Way more fun!

  18. 14 minutes ago, BenLi said:

...which also explains my question few days ago:

the density calculation is made for the first block and its area rather than for the chunk the first block is located in.

It also explains why two readings in the same chunk may have different values.

This also makes the VSProspectorInfo mod quite inaccurate as the mod registers the last made reading per chunk and not per reading itself.

Eh well its accurate enough, the values of the single block probably are roughly accurate to the chunk

  19. Answering my own question. Examining the games code (Which is hopefully acceptable as I did not use my own copy of the game but rather the publically available github code) it would seem that the answer is (sort of) B

The game is actually giving you a reading on the basis of a single block, which is actually the first one you breaksddaa.thumb.png.06116501cdffbf78fce5d1a4d1b212bf.png

This sort of changes the meta as I used to try and put as much distance between readings as possible to get the widest area but its actually most efficient to go the minimum distance since it doesnt actually matter

  20. Before I start i'll just say this isn't my usual whining about not being able to find ore haha

What I mean by "Fake" is this:

The prospecting pick is claimed to work by triangulation. Take a reading in 3 points and get an idea of the ore generation within the area you have defined. However, when in creative mode it is only required you break a single rock to get a reading. This means 1 of 3 things is possible

A: The propick is giving a reading for a triangular area of ores in survival mode, but only a single block in creative
B: The propick is always giving a reading of a single block, the last one your break. The triangulation is just for show to make it a challenge
C The propick is just giving you the reading for the whole chunk. The triangulation is arbitrary

    Thoughts?

  21. Yeah after I realized that wolves can be handled easily in deep water and that they can be outrun the woods got less scary but the bear adds some of that fear of God back into me lol
