  1. I have two sets of gates back to back, and only ever have one gate open at a time so nothing escapes. Later on I added hoppers above the troughs so I don't have to fill them daily, and am able to reach the hoppers from outside of the pen
  2. I updated from 1.21.4 to 1.21.6 without issue. No mods in use so I can't speak on how it affects them. If I'm not mistaken, major updates (such as 1.20.x to 1.21.x) are the bigger risk for breaking saves
  3. usually by the time i can start building a tower they're climbing it and and hitting me off not to mention the couple of times i accidentally drove them closer to my animal pens rather than farther away from them
  4. black bears are the only ones i can handle, i regularly die to brown bears. haven't encountered a polar bear yet but i'm sure i'd die to them too. at a minimum i think there should be a mechanic to startle the bears and cause them to flee (with a % chance of that failing), similar to how people are advised to handle bear encounters in real life.
  5. I tried this in an empty cart I found and it seems like the whole thing may be bugged in my case? The character laid down and closed their eyes, but time never passed while they were laying down, instead the clock froze. when they got up, I was unable to sleep again as if a full sleep cycle had passed. playing in 1.21.4
  6. oop, I got my numbers mixed up in my post - i'm on 1.21.5 thank you for the info!
  7. All of the caves in my world seem to be affected by the current rift activity level, except for one that is constantly flooded with very strong monsters. i've resorted to going into creative to try to thin them out becuase there's often over 20 roaming around, but more spawn as i'm doing so. is there a certain y level where rift activity is not factored into spawn rates anymore? if so, why would the mine that tunnels into the cave not also be swarmed (aside from what was coming out of the cave)? the mine and cave are lit the same (that is, poorly), and i can't even enter the cave to try to light it up because 6-8 monsters attack the second i pass the gate i'm using to contain them. currently playing on 1.21.5 edit: while doing another creative mode pass through the cave i found a bellhead shiver, and am now wondering if he's the reason for all the spawns. I was under the impression they'd make a noise similar to the bells when they were rallying more monsters, though?

    Winter

i settled near spawn, so freezes start in October and end around March. moving south will bring you to warmer climates with shorter freezes
  9. i know there are boats and translocators, and believe i'd seen that you can ride some animals, but are there any other transportation systems in vanilla? alternatively, what transportation mods (if any) would you recommend?
  10. just happened to me, i lost my propick and a couple other tools i have despawn time set to an hour and made it back within a matter of minutes, and was able to recover the majority of my inventory. i even resorted to digging around the area in case it somehow glitched into the ground, with no luck
  11. Having a bit of a schedule helps a lot. In my case, daytime is for gathering resources and exploring, while nighttime is for cooking, clay, smithing, (interior) home renovations, and digging. I will add though, Bowtorn don't seem to flee/despawn at daybreak like they should. I'd seen the recommendation to run out of the chunk to force them to despawn when this happens, which has worked for me. It's relatively easy to dodge the arrows while fleeing, if they even shoot.
  12. Could it be that the singleplayer world is either more explored or has more buildings on it, so there's more happening in the background to affect FPS than in the multiplayer server? I've only played singleplayer so far, but have noticed FPS is getting slightly lower the more I progress (nothing this drastic, though)
  13. I'll have to give this a try, thank you!
  14. A family of wolves is becoming a nuisance, and I was wondering if I'd be able to bait them into a pit by throwing raw meat into it. Would this work, or do carnivores ignore raw meat in favor of live prey?
  15. I'm still extremely new to the game so can't speak on every point you brought up, but I do have a bit of input I saw in the world settings when setting up my first (and only) world that there was an option for a colored map. I sort of regret not toggling that on myself for similar reasons, it sounds like that would address a lot of your struggles with the map. Map markers are definitely going to be your friend with the default one As for the constant rain, it's my understanding that different regions in the game have different weather conditions, so you should be able to run a distance and end up in a place that isn't so wet (you'll likely also find an area with less caves this way). If all else fails, you can create a new world and it will generate new terrain/biomes. There's also world generation settings you can play around with while you're creating the world I agree it initially seemed almost absurdly dark even when the moon is out, but it's something I've gotten used to. Having a lit torch in-hand helps a lot if you have to go outside at night. I spend nights inside of my base crafting and making pottery, so the outdoor light level isn't an issue for me currently You also mention modding Minecraft - Vintage Story has many mods as well, I've not used any myself yet but have seen several quality of life mods that I'll likely be trying out once I get the basics down. I'd recommend scrolling through the list accessible through this website and/or asking around about peoples' favorite mods to see if any catch your eye All in all, it's important to remember this isn't Minecraft. I've played MC for over a decade so I understand how easy it is to compare the two, but VS is both much more detailed and much more customizable.
