Redwood Boat

I am trying to make a Redwood Boat, but it says it needs redwood log, the one with the bark on it. When ever I cut down Redwood Trees, I get redwood quarter blocks. I cant used the redwood quarter blocks for the boat, or to make Beams. I haven't managed to get any Redwood seeds. Can I grow smaller redwoods that would give me barked logs, or is this a bug?
