Amazing game with a talented set of developers behind it! The developers keep adding new things and improving the game monthly, and the players always know what to expect due to their numerous dev logs and even a roadmap. The game itself is very detailed and realistic, and with the addition of mods, highly customizable. Too busy playing to write a longer review. 100/10 Game, worth every cent!

Been playing off and on for about 3 years. Put the game down since I had done everything, but then 1.20 came out and I'm once again sucked into the game. Truly an amazing game that I feel most people could sink hundred of hours into once you get used to the basic mechanics. The difficulty is basically entirely up to you and you can fine tune it to your leisure if you want a harder/easier experience. I've recommended the game to several friends and spent many nights after work playing. Looking forward to the new story content!

[ENG] I discovered the game by chance through social media. I was really drawn to the atmosphere and the feeling of a "real" survival game, and it was an instant purchase. After trying to jump in blind, a rather rough first few hours, and having created at least four different worlds, I'm now crafting bronze in my small mud brick house while every living being and mechanical creature I encounter tries to eat me alive. I've already spent about 20 hours in this world and I'm LOVING it. Despite the fact that during the first few hours I even considered making a refund because of how difficult the game was, it's worth learning because Vintage Story gives you a feeling no other game has ever managed to give me. I've tried every Minecraft mod pack imaginable, and I have almost every survival game you can think of in my library, and none of them hook me like this one, it's truly unique. I hope the developers continue with their vision and keep polishing what, for me, is already one of the best survival games I've ever played.

Incredibly unique survival experience that builds on the foundation of Minecraft but introduces a deeper, more challenging take on survival mechanics. I also see this game being better in term of detail oriented creative builds.

Deep Progression System: Vintage Story makes progression feel rewarding. While ores and materials are readily available, you must first work with lower-quality materials before 'unlocking' higher-tier tools and resources. This gradual advancement adds depth and satisfaction.

Challenging Survival Mechanics: From managing hunger to surviving wildlife encounters, every aspect of survival feels meaningful. Even seemingly harmless animals like goats can be deadly early on. Mining is made more engaging with cave-ins, adding an element of risk and realism.

Atmospheric and Slow-Paced Gameplay: The game forces you to slow down and think strategically rather than rushing through tasks. This pacing enhances the immersion and makes each decision feel impactful.

Spooky, Grungy Aesthetic: The game leans into a darker, eerie atmosphere with mechanics like temporal storms. While some players may enjoy this, I personally found it less appealing and opted to disable it.

Natural World Generation:  The world feels more organic compared to the rigid biome structure of Minecraft. Environments transition smoothly, creating a more natural and immersive experience as you explore.

Looking ahead, I’d love to see more survival and building mechanics, like an expanded windmill system or something akin to redstone for automation, or maybe even steam generation mechanics. It’s great to see an active dev team continuously improving the game.

After a long time, I’ve finally found a game that excites me -- one that makes me want to explore, experiment, and push forward. Excited to see this game bloom.

Hot Take: the name Vintage Story doesn’t quite fit.

This game is AMAZING! I love the survival mechanics and enemies, it's like discovering minecraft for the first time but even better than before! Im not the biggest fan of the lore but you can play without giving too much attention to it :)

Vintage story is the game I had always hoped Minecraft would become during it's Beta.

Where Minecraft diverged to be a more meaningless, creative-driven building game, Vintage Story actually puts purpose behind everything you do, and emphasizes survival in a harsh, brutal and yet stunning environment. The various gameplay mechanics all intertwine to create a world where you can feel genuinely accomplished after having built yourself a humble shelter, and where elaborate architecture is a luxury that comes after many hard-fought battles.

No longer will you feel vague emptiness after having built the house of your dreams, instead you will see your accomplishments and be proud of how far you've come.

If you crave more interesting, engaging and challenging gameplay, Vintage Story will give you just that. It will give you a much more grand reason to build that home of your dreams, either alone, or while challenging the wilderness with your friends.

If you love survival games that actually challenge you, Vintage Story is a game you need to check out. At first glance, it might remind you of Minecraft, but trust me, this game takes things to a whole new level—more depth, more realism, and a lot more ways to die (in the best way possible). VS has a beautiful, handcrafted feel. The voxel-based world is detailed, with gorgeous lighting, realistic seasons, and biomes that feel alive. Don’t expect flashy, high-end graphics—this game thrives on atmosphere. This isn’t your typical "punch tree, get wood" survival game. Here, you have to think. Tools break, food spoils, and winter is brutal if you're not prepared. The crafting system is hands-on—knapping stone tools and smithing metal require actual effort, not just clicking a recipe. Vintage Story makes survival feel like an actual accomplishment. If you don't store food properly, you'll starve. If you don’t build shelter, you'll freeze. And if you wander into a cave unprepared? The nightmare creatures lurking below will remind you why that was a bad idea. This is not a casual game—it demands patience and learning. But if you're into deep survival mechanics and love games that reward effort, Vintage Story is a gem. It has an amazing community, mod support, and continuous updates from passionate developers.

I think it is a must-play for survival fans!
And don't forget to grab your buddies, the game becomes even more interesting with them!

Bye.

One of the best games i've ever played. It's as fast or slow as you want it to be. Supports a ton of different playstyles and has some really interesting mechanics, my favorite being blacksmithing. They just added Elk Mounts, very Mononoke. HUGE FAN!

With its clearly dedicated development team, Vintage story offers an experience you may be familiar with; A hardcore, open world survival game with various RPG elements, and is often compared to one of the largest games in history that I'm sure you know of called Minecraft, this is not a good comparison to make, but I shall try to do so here. Whilst its true they may look similar, a more inexperienced gamer may even confuse the two games from visuals alone, as Minecraft (MC) is historically a highly modded game, with various texture packs. That being said the core gameplay, goals you make for yourself and overall vibe of the game are wildly different.
I have played hundreds, possibly even thousands of hours of Minecraft and nothing, that is to say no mod pack, ever came close to the experience vintage story provides, it is utterly unique. I discovered this game existed a handful of years ago but only recently took the plunge and bought it, I do not regret this decision. I was just about to download and play the latest modpack for our old favourite block game Minecraft when, an impulse took hold, a need for change, for improvement, and that's when I remembered, Vintage Story.

So with my game code bought and client account created, I downloaded and launched VS, with only a vague idea of what to expect as my only knowledge of the game was a hazy memory of a short YouTube video showcasing the game from a few years ago, but I had my years of experience in MC to help me right? I knew I'd need wood to start with but its not as simple as just punching a tree, no. not here. In VS to harvest wood you must first, run blindly through the forests and plains until you find yourself some flint stones, at which point you'll have to knap your own tools. Here is where all of my knowledge relating to MC became redundant, Vintage story is a voxel based game designed in a custom game engine, if that didn't already peak your interest it should. Anyway, you may think that sounds rather tedious but I assure you it wasn't, there's a rather heavy focus on exploration because unlike in MC there is actual lore and worldbuilding in the default game mode of vintage story, there is in fact, a story to be told. Ruins to be discovered, NPC's to be found and traded with, also books or scrolls that reveal stories of the past. "What happened here?", "What happened to the world?", "What is going to happen?", "what on earth is that giant creature in the distance?", these are all questions you may find yourself asking as you discover the various secrets of vintage story whilst simply trying to find sticks and stones in your first hours of gameplay.
Vintage story has much to offer in the long-term too, progression is undoubtedly slow but feels so much more rewarding than MC's progression, even in modpacks Minecraft's progression feels tedious and overall less fulfilling than even making a simple copper ingot in VS. Then there's the endless YouTube tutorials you need to watch to familiarise yourself with each mod, so that you can actually progress in a Minecraft modpack. My point being, when I play a MC modpack, I really don't feel anything anymore when I get those diamonds or make that armour set that lets me swim in lava etc. which is a shame because the effort it takes to reach those heights is no small feat, often taking hours of gameplay for the average person whereas, in Vintage Story every torch, each copper nugget and all of the animals around me, are important, things matter in VS. A contributing factor to this may very well be the extremely in depth weather system, that forces you to brave harsh weather such as lightning storms or strong wind that blows with such force, your character has to shade their eyes, presumably from the small bits of sand, dust and other such matter that would be picked up by such a gale in the real world, you can really feel the wind on your W key its quite the experience. Then there's the seasons, fully realised and well thought out these changing conditions force you to adapt and create a seasonal change in what materials you have available, needless too say, winter is coming. and you must prepare.

The game has a mod management button on the main menu. I think that sentence alone tells you all you'd want to know about modding in Vintage Story, its built in, and although you currently can't browse mods to download whilst in-game, I have no doubt that is a feature that will be implemented one day. The community that surrounds vintage story is very cosy, it feels like we're all gathering around the same warm light to do the same thing, have fun and as such the modding community is booming, mods are often updated and well designed, more often than not slotting right into the Vintage Story vibe and the best part is that the developers seemingly pay attention to these mods and take inspiration when updating the core game. I don't believe I need to make any comparisons to Minecraft in this department aside from perhaps mentioning that there are multiple launchers you could use to find mods for and play modded Minecraft, its all in one place here, no confusion, its simple to mod VS and there's even a dedicated tool for creating mods for vintage story created by the developers, and support is always available for creators in the vintage story official discord.
Oh I almost forgot, remember those endless YouTube vids you'd need to watch for a MC modpack? yea you can forget that in VS, there is an in game handbook that goes over all of the mechanics and crafting recipes within the game by default, these descriptions are very useful and guided my experience through the game, as even mods often have clear descriptions and tutorials for everything the mod offers, as well as hints towards future updates. This handbook even comes with the feature of simply clicking H whilst hovering your mouse over an item in your inventory, to bring up all the crafting recipes and information associated with the item, its amazing.

Overall I can highly recommend Vintage story to any who have enjoyed Minecraft in the past and have "grown out of it" or anyone looking for an in depth hardcore survival game with some RPG elements, which reminds me, I never mentioned that there are classes with class specific crafts and benefits to choose from when you create your character in vintage story, oh yeah, that's all a thing. I have very high hopes for this game and although it has been in public development for almost 10 years at time of writing this, they are a small, independent development team with the game not listed on major sites like the steam market, so it often goes unnoticed, despite this there is a large content filled update (1.20.0) coming out soon. I firmly believe all vintage story needs is more people, we need a larger community to motivate the dev team to keep going! because this Vintage Story is something special and must be nurtured.

Thank you for reading.

The game is looking great, but the installation process on Mac so far was not the best. It would be nice if the web-site had a short instruction on how to launch unverified executable on MacOS. Also, there are cases when UI is slightly broken (when content of a window doesn't fit) especially in graphics settings. And it would be nice to change resolution to something specific and not just arbitrary scaling value.

Easily the best game in the survival-crafting genre and its not even complete. The ability to customize your game-play experience before starting a world means that the game can be accessible to anyone of any skill level. Progression is slow-paced but not overly complex and the in-game survival handbook shows you all the recipes and guides you need to succeed. Mod support is great too.

Bought on 06/26/2024, I recall hearing about this game few months back but didnt do a go ahead cause of the price, than once again around 6/26 I saw it up and said F it clearly this is a sign. This is actually proudly my second time outright paying for a game cause it seemed so nice. And the first game I ever bought out of pocket (Counter Strike) was just because, but this one was a full on commitment to me watching the care this community and dev put onto the game. All the games I played were either free or pirated. I never even picked up MC because of regrets since my childhood days, and slowly watching the game fall apart and move away from its player base. This is why is love Vintage Story, I hope they stay indie for ever to come. Love you mom :)

Brilliant game! Where do I start:

The crafting mechanics are amazing, and I love how every material has a way to be shaped into what you want, from stone tools, to pots and forging!

I love how the world interacts with itself and the player! Animals hunt animals, wolves stay in groups and will get aggressive if you go near them, some game will try to defend itself from being hunted, other animals will want to eat your crops and more.

Speaking of crops, the farming in this game is in depth. You can't just plant wherever and whenever. You will want a fertile soil, you should see if it lacks any nutriens, if it's moist, if it's too cold or warm, nutriens will get exhausted and should replenish over time.

Mining is the next big thing because you'll need to prospect for the ores you need. It's not as simple as games like minecraft, where you find iron and you're set, it'll be long before that happens in this game! One of the game's main aspects is the ages you go through, like copper age, which is hard enough to get to, but oh so rewarding when you're there. Every accomplishment in this game feels amazing because you've worked so hard for it!

And the final thing I want to note is how polished this game is! I haven't encountered a single bug yet and everything just works as it is supposed to! I love how the developers aren't rushed to develop the game and therefore offer a refined, yet "unfinished" product. I can't wait to see what comes next in the VS universe, kudos to the devs, this game deserves more attention! 5 stars experience!

I bought this game in February 2020 and I still play it on occasion. It's definitely worth 18 euro. Honestly I think it would be a good value at 30-40 euro as well.

I like to think of this as the "adult" version of Minecraft, even though it's not really like Minecraft at all. Yes, this game looks similar at first glance because it's a procedural generated world made up of blocks. You gather resources, build, and survive. There's a 3x3 crafting grid like in Minecraft which is used for some things but there's also a much more intricate crafting system when it comes to cooking, clayworking, smelting, blacksmithing, and leatherworking.

You place your clay on the ground and you shape each layer of the thing you're making voxel by voxel. You put the raw, unfired clay into a pit kiln and light it on fire so the clay can cook and harden. If you want to make a pickaxe, you must first build a mold out of clay, cook it in the pit kiln, then place it on the ground or on a table. You also need to make a crucible out of clay and do the same thing. You put the crucible on a firepit, add your copper nuggets, and light the fire. The fire has to be hot enough to melt copper which means you can't use sticks as a fuel source. You have to make charcoal or use brown or black coal.

Once the crucible is full of molten copper, you pour it into the pickaxe mold you made earlier. Once the copper cools, you have a pickaxe head. Open the crafting grid and place it in there and put one stick under it.

Some things can't be made with molds. So you have to build an anvil. You create an anvil mold out of clay, pour your molten metal in, and let it cool. Then you pour molten metal into ingot molds to make ingots. Those can be re-heated on a forge so they can be worked on the anvil. Then you use a hammer (which you have to make using a hammer mold) to shape the ingot, voxel by voxel, until it has the correct shape for whatever you're making.

In Minecraft you'd just take a few diamonds or iron ingots, plop them in the crafting grid with some sticks and you have tools. That's boring. Leatherworking and cooking have different mechanics which are also more complex than Minecraft.

I've spent a lot of time talking about the crafting aspects of it but you can also grow crops, fruit trees, raise bees (and collect honey), and breed animals. Each new generation of animal you breed gets tamer and tamer. Eventually they won't be afraid of you at all. You can bake pies and bread, make soups and stews, make jam, beer, and preserve meat.

Food spoils over time so you have to find ways to preserve it. Jam lasts longer than the berries you use to make it, cured meat lasts longer than normal cooked meat, and you can put soups and stews in crocks in a cellar to make them last longer. And you have to do this or you will be very hungry when winter comes and your crops die.

I really enjoy the depth and level of detail this game has.

I don't have too much play time just yet but after seeing the amount of detail and care put into this game I had to leave a review!
After recent events with another popular sandbox block building game (which I will not get into here). I felt like I needed to move away from it a bit and explore other open world sandbox options, at first I saw this game as another "clone" which for a while kept me away. However after reading more into the game and finally deciding to try it for myself I found that while this game does hold some resemblances and inspiration from another popular game it can clearly be seen it is far from a "clone", it is a very unique game offering immersive survival mechanics and engaging gameplay, the game is backed by amazing players, and devs who truly care about their project and players! If you are on the fence about it defiantly give it a try!
