this might be something that's possible now, but if not, something i think would be neat.

A method of getting a copy-to-file of your in-game character, which you can then send to someone else so you can load via multiplayer to play the same character with the same equipment on their world.

I'd like to think it's something like a portal or gateway that  you can build on your world which saves your character to file, then closes you out of your world, with the file being deleted / invalid when you load your world again.

So you go through this gate, send the file to a buddy, the buddy puts that file somewhere in their game folders, and when you join their game, you enter through a similar gate on their end. When you're done, you can leave through the same gate, get the file from your buddy, and use it to walk back out of the gate in your own world with any changes to your character or their inventory persisting between worlds.

Back when I played Minecraft, I always wanted a 'server portals' mod, where you can build a portal, give it the server's login information, and walk through it to the server's world.  It would somewhat break immersion, but it seemed reasonable that if you log out while still in the server world, resuming the game would leave you at the portal in your single-player world.

Basically exactly what you said, just with file transfers handled automatically :D

I've had very similar thoughts, but working in the Nether. Basically you walk in through your portal, travel through the Nether, and it transitions from your nether to the nether of another player / server you have a connection too, and you can find one of their portals to walk on in.

Granted there's the problem of transferring mod items or the like back and fourth, but yeah. Any time i wanted to "Keep immersion" when moving from one world to another, I'd try to enter/exit through a nether portal :P
