I like how the game already optimizes graphics. I think there are more opportunities that don't affect gameplay, and could help players make energy savings, or spend longer playing unplugged.

Suggestions, based on some assumptions:

  1. Don't re-render the world if the game is paused.
  2. Don't re-render the UI if it doesn't change.
  3. Don't run the compositor if nothing changes (including the cursor, if it's a software cursor).
  4. Option to reduce the frame rate and resolution if the game is unpaused and the player is idle for a few minutes (FFXIV does this). Option because it could affect players idly watching for action in the game world.
  5. Option to not animate the background of the front menu screen. It's only a panning image, but requires the whole rendering pipeline, so switching that off would unlock other savings.

I can only guess at the energy saving, based on a mix of potato laptops and gaming desktops: about 100kW per 1000 players, assuming players spend some time in the guides or paused or idle. Or for the gaming PC or streamer, about the price of the game again, for about 400 hours of play (UK energy pricing).

+kudos for improvements for environmental impact.
