One year (and a day) ago, @Svarrmir and I started up our first world in Vintage Story together, so today seems like a good opportunity for us to share our experiences and satisfaction with the game.

We used to play Minecraft for a long time, but in recent years, we became unhappy with the general direction the game and its development have taken. And since we both had heard good things about VS, we decided to give it a shot. We did not regret it!

Our Vintage Story adventure definitely made it our GOTY 2024. Where to begin?

The gameplay is just to our taste. In that certain other game, we were used to everyone doing their crafting, mining and farming on their own. The most amount of team play were joined travels and occasionally sharing ores and food. In Vintage Story, within the first days we already started to divide the tasks. On a VS homestead, there are fields to sow and harvest, animals to tend to, food to prepare, hides to tan, ores and alloys to smelt, tools, weapons and armor to smith ... I haven't played a survival game that made working together as valid as this game does.

Generally, the game already feels very polished. (We often laugh at the "Early Access" disclaimer in the menu. It does not feel like Early Access.) It runs perfectly (out of the box on Linux), modding has never been easier, crashes and bugs are few and far between and the beautiful graphics make exploring the world a magical experience.

I'd also like to add that we've grown to love the seraphs. Express Yourself and gesture macros really added to it. (To be honest, we're now used to going "Whooop~" whenever we shrug.)

We were already very satisfied, but exploring the first story location is what really got us hyped. We went in completely blind and allowed ourselves to be fully immersed, so in case you haven't seen the first story location yet, I highly recommend avoiding the spoilers!

The journey to the archives, which took us a few days, really helped hyping us up. We build a small outpost base from the ruins of an old tower nearby, which turned out quite useful since the archives were too big to explore in a single expedition.

After climbing down that harrowing long elevator shaft and entering the central hall, we ran into a curious meta situation. Our monitors are different and everything is darker on Svarrmir's side. So while having a look around, I suddenly noticed a certain ... thing? in the middle that I could barely make out and describe to my companion. My favorite type of horror are the things that don't announce themselves with loud noises and flashy jumpscares, but where you have to wonder "How long has that been there?"

Later, while exploring the different levels of the archives, we felt rewarded for our attentiveness several times. Figuring out how to turn on the lights without quest markers and such felt rewarding. And then we came across a strange series of level generation bugs. Well, it's early access, right? I won't forget the moment we realized they weren't bugs at all.

And finally, speaking of things we won't forget, entering the library after hours of exploration felt incredibly rewarding. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I felt more impressed in that moment than I felt during the final sequences of most games I've played so far.

To wrap that up, we are definitely looking forward to the next story updates!

There is more to say, but to keep this readable, we'll leave it for another time.
Thank you so much for Vintage Story, and have fun to all players!

It was an amazing year so far and we can't wait for the full release of 1.20!

(I wanted to post this pic from our balcony (where we scout for double headed drifters)):
