Been poking around a couple of times... there's a lot that I really love about this, even at my first steps. Even tried out with some of the ground instability settings, wow THAT makes you stay on your toes, hearing the ground start to crumble underneath you and sprinting/jumping away frantically only to look back at the massive cave crawling with rust monsters you almost fell into is CERTAINLY an experience, even listening to the heavy breathing sounds of your character... me too little guy, me too.

The frustration I'm having is clay... I know just enough about the game to know clay is super important... i just.. I can't find it, even spending days ranging around in wet lowlands and peat bogs... I can find practically everything for the early game... except clay.

Am I over-thinking needing to find Clay before starting to settle down? Or is it one of those things you just kinda need to keep looking until you find some?

Strange.
I often find red clay in the plains, I don't have this problem.

My technique at the beginning is to run while avoiding forests and mountains, which allows me to increase my exploration area and therefore the chance of finding a spot of red clay.

Otherwise find  sand and pan to get out the gray clay.
It's very long, but at the same time you're also going to make copper, it's a good alternative.

Some people find this annoying, like my wife, it is one of the best features in my opinion. Every time I hear the collapsing I freak out for a sec then smile. This feature makes this game stand out from others like it.

Ohhh, that I didn't know you could do... yeah OK that does open up usable areas a lot more.

I found red and gray clay  with no problem, but ''Fire Clay'' i never find it, i had to produce it with red clay and fintstone but take to much time.

OK well had taken a break for a few days but decided to come back to it for a bit... did a bunch of exploring from my horrid "dirt box" home, started getting together stuff for some basic wood lamellar armor, and on the way back was looking at the ground and just "huh, this ground looks wie-OH MY GOD CLAY!" Looks like a fair sized deposit of red clay and I was just... so happy. Am making the start of a charcoal pit and other preparations.

Yeah... yeah OK I think this game might be for me. 😅

for the life in me I cant find peat in my current map for 1.20.3, and I went as far away as 2.5M blocks in search of it. Ran into red clay while hunting, and blue clay near water while looking for wild crops, and later on peat.

And their is nothing wrong with a good old dirt mansion in the beginning, @ScytheKnight. Still living in one myself for now, preparing for my first winter in the save. Mostly relying on pit traps for now, and getting ready to start my animal farm with a pair of Aurochs that got caught in a pit trap near my dirt mansion.
