AuburnGhost Posted April 27, 2025 Report Posted April 27, 2025 (edited) I realy like that crates can be used for bulk sotorage, but when it comes to storrage of food they fall short. You can see Crocks freshness at a glance, same with items on a shelf, and when you open the storrage vessel you can inspect each item to see its freshness easily... on the other hand you need to take an item from the crate, then inspect the item, do some math (or put it in a storage vessel) since things you hold spoil faster in your hands, then put it back. All the items in the crate have the same freshness so could easily fit in the tool tip. Though i suspect there probably is a code reason this is not implemented yet, i hope this is something that could be implemented sometime in the future. Also crates seem to have a wierd freshness calculation as it seems they use the first iserted items freshness for everything inserted after rather than averaging like in the inventory or a vessel. Edit: Another similar situation is that jugs also do not show spoilage of their contents. They also do not even show what they containon when on shelfs. Edited April 28, 2025 by AuburnGhost
V1ncent Posted April 28, 2025 Report Posted April 28, 2025 I like the idea, though the game mechanics seem similar to the barrel where the first part of content "registered" the freshness, and subsequent parts just follow the existing freshness regardless of their own. I usually utilize this trick to press the last batch of berries in late autumn and get the most from the freezing winter storage bonus. Speaking of this, I am curious about if the crates get the cellar bonus applied properly, as I've never used any crate in my cellar.

I too utilize this feature of crates and barrels to extend the shelf life of my produce, though it is a little clunky and feels somewhat like an unintended exploit at times. 16 hours ago, V1ncent said: I am curious about if the crates get the cellar bonus applied properly, as I've never used any crate in my cellar. From what i have tested in my world, they do apply the cellar bonus. My beries inserted with 1 day left lasted atleast 3 days before spoiling, which checks out with the advertised 0.28 spoil time of my crates in the cellar.
V1ncent Posted April 29, 2025 Report Posted April 29, 2025 Sweet, one more reason to loot all the crates from ruins on my way of hunting translocator. A new discovery as I enter into goat milking is that the milk stored in barrels apparently does not share the "registration" of freshness feature with juice. With only one milkable goat in the pen, I save up the daily milk in a barrel and the lifetime just gets "averaged" after every new bucket of fresh milk. This feels a bit weird as both are liquid food items with freshness but with different mechanism.
AuburnGhost Posted May 1, 2025 Author Report Posted May 1, 2025 (edited) Update: after some experimenting it seems that crates remember input sequence of stacks with different freshness in some cases, which suggests that items could rot induvidualy in a crate? Update: i have now confirmed that stacks in crate are treated induvidualy by freshness. they will "pool" and rot induvidualy. meaning that you could end up with alternating layers of rot and fresh items Edited May 2, 2025 by AuburnGhost
