Apocalypse_Andy Posted August 7, 2025 Report Posted August 7, 2025 I think the glider would be more useful if the controls worked like this: activating the glider instantly switches to free look mode (first or 3rd person depending on what you started at) and starts you off at an even glide. Pressing forward angles the glider down increasing speed, pressing back angles the glider up and slows down. Double pressing space closes the glider and opens it back up again to set you back to an even glide. 4
HairyGeoff Posted August 7, 2025 Report Posted August 7, 2025 This idea for controls makes it feel more natural. Completely agree!
dracsfantastic Posted August 8, 2025 Report Posted August 8, 2025 Oh, yes! That sound like it will be a bit easier to control. As someone who has found his way to the ground quickly with a glider, improved controls would be great! :)
Apocalypse_Andy Posted August 21, 2025 Author Report Posted August 21, 2025 In addition to the original post, I was thinking that adding a higher tier glider down the road powered by temporal gears would be nice. Something that reached higher max speeds, stayed up in the air slightly longer, or even had an ability on cooldown to give you a boost upward. It would be nice if there were a vanilla way to appreciate your build from above without having to build ladder towers. I hope the game does progress eventually to some sort of air travel.
Toroic Posted August 21, 2025 Report Posted August 21, 2025 The glider, despite the time invested to get it, is straight up terrible. It can be situationally fun to use, but the glide ratio (horizontal blocks vs vertical blocks travelled) is terrible, and given it's fairly dangerous and buggy to use, the end result is that you're better off just ignoring it.

It might be just me as I use it as soon as I get the schematic, but it feels far less suicidal in 1.20 than it ever has before. I have seen no posts about it in the update logs, but I am convinced that there was a change in the damage, or more specifically how much you have to look up to reset the fall height. No doubt it is dangerous, it takes up a lot of bag slots, and just grazing something in front of you will drop you like a stone. It would be great if the double tap spacebar would reset your fall height. I have been critical of it in the past; however, currently I always keep it on me and swap to a regular bag if I run out of space. It can provide a slight speed boost even on flat ground, that gets even better if you drop several blocks. I usually play with a modified terrain and it would be less useful in vanilla terrain generation, I'll give you that.

Yeah, with vanilla worldgen there's not a lot of reason to climb up super high, so situations where you really can benefit from the glider are slim, though it's not hard to reserve the inventory slot with how many you get. I love the idea of the glider, and absolutely love the equivalent in the other block game, but the current tier is too grounded to be useful in my opinion. The flat ground use is interesting but ultra sweaty for a slight speed boost.
