Absolutely, the community on the official server is generally very helpful and there is a teleporter network already in place that will help you guys find a place to settle fairly easily. There is no pvp, little to no griefing.

Yah, agree with that. And it´s vanilla so he can learn basics and if will friend enjoy the game than you can migrate to some modded one
