Hey everyone, hope you're having a great day/night so far. I was just curious on what the status of the updates in regards to the Flatpak. I did do a quick search for "Flatpak" but received nothing.

I'm not in too dire of a need to play the latest version as I'm brand new to the game and have plenty on my hands to deal with regardless. I thought it might be that I'm on Debian so due to older packages I would've been curated an older version for compatibility sake. My friend on PikaOS mentioned he is also 3 versions behind. Also a Debian derivative but much more up to date.

Is the Flatpak not seeing updates at this time, or do I have a misunderstanding to version no.? I guess it could also be that 1.21.1 is a stable release and the 1.21.4 is an unstable release? I know this post is scatterbrained but I guess i didn't really find it too much worth the time to ask such a trivial question with bullet points and walls of text. I will leave some system info below in regards to version that might help someone answer the question (regardless of its importance).

Kernel: Linux 6.12.48+deb13-amd64
OS: Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie) x86_64
DE: GNOME 48.4
WM: Mutter (X11)

Vulkan: 1.3.277 - NVIDIA [550.163.01]

OpenGL: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 550.163.01

If you're using Flathub, the flatpak version there always lags behind by a few days after a release. I'm sure it will be updated in a day or two. Give them time, as they've been very busy fixing bugs. 1.21.2 required quick fixes, and 1.21.3 only existed for a few hours, so those versions never made it to Flathub. 1.21.4 should show up soon.

According to the wiki, you can install flatpak versions directly from Anego. I've not done so myself, but that version is reportedly updated much quicker than Flathub.

Thank you for the details! I did try installing VS from the repo from Anego themselves but it seemed to be on the same version as what was already installed. I didn't realize that was the case with the updates so that's extremely helpful. I appreciate it! I'll have to make another post about having issues running the install.sh as it says Fatal! I require sysctl but it's not installed.  Aborting.

Thanks again EWsssfjioewhg!

You're very welcome.

Sysctl modifies kernel parameters, and looking at the instructions, it seems install.sh is probably trying to modify network privileges so that one-click install for mods works. Sysctl apparently isn't installed by default for your version of Debian. I'm a Fedora user, and I've never tried to install the game directly, so I'm only guessing.

That's what is crossing me up at the moment. I don't recall installing it myself, but it is installed on my system, and I very well might've installed it as a dependency of another tool and not paid good enough attention to recall it. i might need to install procps:i386 instead but to be honest I'm not sure. Still somewhat an amateur on Linux and don't want to break Debian as I just migrated after breaking my Arch install (btw xd).

It does seem to be installed. Running sysctl would require superuser access. Are you running the install script with sudo? If not, then it would fail because your regular user doesn't have the necessary privileges.

I thought that as well and color me baffled when I tried and was returned to not run the script as sudo.

Spoiler

*downloads tar*

*runs ./install.sh*

"sysctl not found? ok then."

*attempts to install procps but finds its already installed*

"oh I know"

*runs with sudo*

"please do not run this script with sudo."

Hmm. There's a thread on the forums about Linux configurations:

https://www.vintagestory.at/forums/topic/520-linux-distrosconfigurations-under-which-vs-is-known-to-run/?page=4

One post on that page from another Debian user says:

I'm still trying to solve a problem with the Vintage Story install.sh script as I get the following error executing it:

Fatal! I require sysctl but it's not installed. Aborting.

sysctl is only usable as a super user (with sudo) so I believe install.sh is trying to run sysctl as a "normal" user which isn't possible.

So you're not alone. I'm not sure what to tell you other than file a bug report.

Hi all. Apologies but just wanted to follow up on the original ask of the OP. Do we have any idea when the official Flatpak will be updated to 1.21.4? both the stable and unstable official non-flathub releases are still out of date.

Thanks!

I do not, I'm really kinda surprised that it's fallen over a month out of date, but this oughta work (untested) in the mean time:

flatpak install --user https://dl.flathub.org/build-repo/217065/at.vintagestory.VintageStory.flatpakref

from https://github.com/flathub/at.vintagestory.VintageStory/pull/106

I attempted switching from flathub to the vintage story remote and noticed it was still 1.21.1. I'm probably about to rebuild my entire pc though so I'm not going to ask for a rush, simply note status i saw last night.

This worked for me. Will let you guys know if I find anything wonky but it seems like this will work until the official repo is updated.

Great news everyone: Just after all the discussion, the flatpak was updated to 1.21.4.

I'll add a line here that helped me resolve the issue with building the game with the install.sh script. If you're receiving the "Fatal! I require sysctl but it's not installed.  Aborting." then just write the line below at the bottom of your .bashrc file located in ~.

export PATH=$PATH:/sbin
