Hopper/Chutes into Large Troughs

Maybe I'm being stupid somehow but hoppers don't seem to be able to place items into large troughs?

They can place into small troughs fine from above but the same setup over a large trough doesn't work. Is it because large troughs expect 2 items per placement and hoppers/chutes can only transport 1? Anyone know of a solution or mod that lets them support it? It's a pretty handy feature for leaving chickens fed with grain for a long time, but now I'm trying to breed cows/boars the large troughs only stacking to 8 and not being able to refill automatically is a nuisance.

Due to the way the large trough works, only one side of it does accept inputs via chutes. Check if you chose the correct one.

I see! It must be side fed. I figured it worked the same as the small trough.
