misterjeffman Posted March 2 Report Posted March 2 (edited) Adding dugout canoes as an early game boat option, would be great. The utility of it would be evened out by the time taken to burn out and then chunk out the canoe, with it being much smaller than the sail boats. Possibly birch bark canoes as well. If you could portage them, and they are just a permanent entity in the world, with you creating them by taking 3 logs and putting a campfire on each, that with it taking a couple in game days to complete the canoe, it would be a great early game vehicle for exploration. Also please add more to fishing, such as nets. Edited March 2 by misterjeffman
Broccoli Clock Posted March 2 Report Posted March 2 Hello and welcome to the forums.. I would like to see something "in the middle" with vanilla, as you have a raft and a sailboat but nothing in between. The raft is ridiculously simple to craft, the sailboat the complete opposite and involves quite the grind. There are mods though, and quite a few of them add boats, I'll link this one.. https://mods.vintagestory.at/canoemode ..but I've not used it myself.
Broccoli Clock Posted March 2 Report Posted March 2 Ok, just had a read of that mod's comments, it seems like it needs pitch glue and there is some issue with that (not sure exactly, but it seems to affect the mod I linked). There is a different mod, that is just that other mod but with the recipe changed, and that's here: https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/29634 As well as these: https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/28881 / https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/35151 Hopefully that isn't an overload of info.

I have seen that mod, though that's arguably an even later game one than a dugout canoe, just as birchbark canoes are less common worldwide than dugouts, and dugouts are incredibly simple and we know they've been used for ages. 1

As I say, I'd like to see something in the middle. I think a dug out canoe, especially one you actually dig out rather than just crafting in your square, would be totally cottage core and suit the vibe of the game well. The one thing though is I feel you need to amend your map gen for there to be enough water for boats to really shine. I tend to find the raft does enough for small journeys otherwise.

Agreed for the world gen. A dugout would be a middle ground between the raft and the sail boat. I think the utility of a dugout, depending on how big it's made (if its only 2 slots, it'll be worse than the raft), would be countered by the time cost of having to burn and scrape out the interior. It could also be scaled, with one being able to do 2-8 logs and have a canoe of the size you want, with speed penalty or the inability to really pick it up for a portage after 3 logs. Being able to have a watercraft that has multiple slots would be great. It could also be expanded into outrigger canoes and outriggers with sails to add more middle ground between the raft and sailboat. Hopefully since they are planning to add rivers, dugout canoes make perfect sense to add then as sailboats aren't a massive river thing, and if rivers are added, we'll hopefully get more bodies of water and improvements to fishing (such as nets, traps, or the automatic salmon catchers). https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e4/Dugout_canoe_manner_boats_de_bry.jpg https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e1/Pōpao.jpg/1920px-Pōpao.jpg https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/18/Südseeabteilung_in_Ethnological_Museum_Berlin_11d.jpg/960px-Südseeabteilung_in_Ethnological_Museum_Berlin_11d.jpg Edited March 2 by misterjeffman
