I've been messing with it almost non-stop since I finally got a hold of the new Steam Controller. I bought it mainly for playing Vintage Story, I had previously tried to get a controller setup working with other controllers but didn't like how it turned out. The Steam controller seemed like a good fit since it has 1. more buttons 2. touch pads and 3. gyro.

It took me a lot of trial and error but I think I've found a really good control scheme with this new controller.

Notable features:

  • No weird layer shenanigans to get stuck on! Unless you count the cursor toggle (it just holds alt).
  • All the things you need to do while running are easily doable while running (changing to shield, putting it in off-hand, and sprint-jumping all at the same time for when you get jumped by a bear).
  • Left Trackpad has colored icons + text for easily learning the 9 things it can do for you. Plus it's pretty fast to click them once you get used to where they are.
  • DPad and Face buttons are all number hotkeys, in an order that I swear makes sense! It's like a clock, but also puts the leftmost item on the leftmost button to make it intuitive (and same with right-hand side). Idk how else to describe it (you can easily change it if you want, I won't blame you haha).
  • Gyro is activated with right grip. I tried both grip, and found it too hard to fix or adjust if my gyro needed to be adjusted or was accidentally turned off. Having it be on Right Grip makes it so you can use your left hand to adjust the controller position while turning off Gyro easily.
  • Since it's so easy to turn on/off gyro, you can turn it off for menus / voxel crafting and use the right touch pad if you want. Though I found it more comfortable to combine gyro and trackpad for most things.
  • R Track pad has trigger dampening (holding triggers makes it stop R Track Pad from moving cursor as much). I found this to be the best to let you use the triggers without messing up your aim for in menus / voxel crafting.

Try it out if you want! It's shared on Steam as "321Bolts' Stick + Grip Gyro for Vintage Story V2". You can also try V1.5 if you want, but I don't think it's nearly as good (plus that one kinda hurts my hand).

Edit: V2.1 swaps drop and change perspective, for easier throwing of torches.
