This isn't an original idea; it's from the Via Romana mod for the other block game. That being said, I think it fits Vintage Story quite well and would be especially appreciable in homo sapien mode. I'll be describing an earlier iteration of that mod as it should be significantly simpler to implement.

OVERVIEW

When editing signs, you may press a button to begin linking. This will exit the interface and allow you to move. Blocks in a small radius under you are continuously scanned in this state. If enough of them are "path blocks", a node will appear every few seconds to mark the traveled road. If the number of path blocks is insufficient, scanning will pause and the mod will warn you of such. It will then wait for you to return to a valid node to resume the scanning state. You can then interact with another sign to set it as the opposite end of your road. If the two signs are connected by continuous, valid nodes, they will become teleporation points.

PENALTY / LIMITATION

Via Romana balances path use by saving the distance between two destinations and using it to inform a cooldown. For instance, traveling a kilometer might mean you can't use paths for a minute, and ten kilometers ten minutes. This shouldn't be linear, but I'm unsure what a good function would look like. Other debuffs such as instant hunger (to account for the travel time) may be appreciable. Servers interested in realism or more playtime could increase penalties and decrease maximum distance if configuration is available.
