Pit Kiln

When I go to make a pit kiln I can't place the sticks. I first put my to-be-fired item in a one block whole then fill it with grass. As far as I know you're supposed to then fill it with sticks and then firewood. The problem is, is that it won't allow my to place the sticks. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Update-

So I made a new world and didn't change anything on the world set up. I then tried to make the pit kiln and it worked perfectly fine. This means that its probably changing the world set up that breaks the pit kiln mechanic.

So..... turns out I'm just really stupid lol. I wasn't putting in enough grass

@Nerdlin Geeksly, I am having the same issue. Can't put grass into pit kiln not sure what is causing this issue, have you found a fix to this? Maybe it's a game bug that needs to be addressed.
