What happens when the Forlorn or blackguard armor breaks?

What will happen? will the repaired pieces turn back into their broken counterparts or just vanish?

I don't know what would happen to it in 1.16, but in 1.17 armor can be repaired and shouldn't disappear when it reaches 0 durability, just like your clothes.
