Shorter Circuit

I hit a surface drifter with a bronze falx. A temporal gear falls onto the floor, and it's not dead. I kill the first one and another comes. Again, I hit it, and again, it drops a gear. I looked at the world settings and the mods I have installed and there's nothing that looks like it would do this, so is this normal?
