Isn't this the point? Roping animals should be a "better safe than sorry" low risk method of getting an animal into a pen, or into a specific area without aggravating it and risking heavy injury if you screw up a jump. Also, for uphill, try shortening the rope. This makes it much easier to pull the animal up, and if it decides to walk in the direction of uphill just disconnect the rope, it might save you a minute or two if it walks up significantly.
