Thank you! why does granite stone not insulate? or could it be the max size?

Hi, I was wondering what does the house icon in the HUD do? is there a benefit of having that? Because I have an open stair to the basement area (obviously my food storage is further up and closed) but if I leave it open I dont get the house icon. I dont even know why because it's all doors and granite rock. And if I close it with trapdoors I get the house icon and the storage below but it kinda blocks me coming up the stairs AND it's ugly ....
