I'm assuming this isn't a bug because I haven't seen anyone posting about it on the issue tracker, which means it's most likely an issue on my end somehow but for the life of me I can't figure out how to fix it. New textures in 1.22 (like lanterns and ladders) will load correctly, and the sky loads correctly as well as traders but everything else loads black. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling over and over again and rebooting the computer and starting a new world vs opening an old one. If anyone has some insight on how I could resolve this I'd be most appreciative!

  4. The main issue I could see with waterwheels as opposed to windmills is upscaling quantity. A large number of waterwheels would need a larger footprint than an equivalent number of windmills. You'd also be limited with waterwheel speed by how fast your river runs while you can always build the windmills higher to access faster winds. And while I'm sure there are realistic ways around those limitations I don't think I'd WANT them in game. I think this way the two balance each other nicely and both would continue to add value.
