Vintage Story stands out to me as a great survival game because it refuses to hand‑hold you, and that’s exactly what makes it brilliant. Its survival systems aren’t just “features” — they’re interconnected layers that demand attention, experimentation, and actual problem‑solving. Everything has weight and consequence. Food spoils, seasons matter, metallurgy is a genuine craft, and even basic tools feel earned rather than given.

What makes it feel like the perfect survival game to me is how these mechanics create a world that pushes back just enough to make every victory meaningful, no matter how small. You don’t just survive in Vintage Story — you learn it, adapt to it, and eventually thrive because you understand how its systems fit together.

For people who want a survival experience that respects their intelligence and rewards curiosity, Vintage Story is in a league of its own.

I love Vintage Story! The game is absolutely amazing. There is so much to do and learn about. Highly recommend.

I don´t like survival games without a deep story, so when I played Minecraft in creative mode, I found that this game is different from the story; you can do things that are real and learn something new about how we made bronze or other things. Yeah, you can be irritated by some aspects, but in the end, it has its own charm. As a programmer in Unity and Unreal Engine, I have to admire how perfectly this game is made on its own engine.

This game has really brilliant ideas and mechanics that I really love and i hope to change my review in future because at the moment it is negative, it is not normal that you have to make hundreds of clicks to make the most simple objects, if you want 3 chests you could get tendinitis. When after 30 hours I had the materials to make my objects but i choose, different times, to go in creative and take the objects from there I understood that there was a problem. (And i played the game with a lot simplified settings because from the tutorial i would always have starved to death simply because i spawned in an area without mushrooms or berries)

Until this godawful website gets a complete and total revamp AND whatever service they are using to deliver keys gets completely scrapped, DO NOT BUY ON THIS WEBSITE. 

There is a chance you will just flat out not receive your key, for multiple days, all the while support is showing absolutely zero signs of life, leaving you with no game but the money is locked up in limbo. You cannot even issue a refund and then purchase from Humble, where you will actually get your key, because as I said, support is showing absolutely zero signs of life. 

Either buy on Humble (or Itch, when that gets added back) where they wont just flat out scam you lol. 

I would love to tell you how great this game is, but I literally cannot play it.

I tend to be a very picky gamer, or play a game for a bit and then never touch it again. Not the case with Vintage Story. I've had the game for a couple of years, now, and I can safely say it is my most reliably played, most thoroughly enjoyed, and most frequently played game.

Almost every world I create ends up with hundreds of hours in it, and I've had over a dozen worlds, at this point. I have easily put 3500 or more hours into this game, and I will be putting many, many more in, for many years into the future.

This game is also one of few I have bought several copies of, just to give to my friends.

anyways yeah if you love gameplay focused and lore-heavy games that are realistic (but not too realistic!) then this is the game for you!!

The best game absolutely ever

Every detail and the engine being so optimized is awesome as hell + the community spectacular. Still encountering issues from os to os and config to config for hosting to play with my gf as i got her the game also, she adores it and Dave .

This game killed Minecraft for me and i will be here from here on out playing this masterpiece of game filled with the best talent ever to make such a heavily optimized game.

Honestly trying to get everyone i have ever spoken to about a gaming on this. my friends keep trying to drag me to minecraft but VS is life now. I've always enjoyed a little challenge and wilderness survival and this game has that in spades, but the best part is starting from literally nothing to having Automation and full plate armor and bringing down what is essentially a god. ive put about 60 hrs into one server with my fiance smithing and building while she makes clothes and food and goes on adventures with me and im still not done, then when you bring in the modding and how easy it is compared to a lot of other platforms (I built a wheellock pistol and enchanted it so it shoots fire bullets now) I genuinely cannot recommend this game enough.

I believe I have had opportunity to try out every feature from stone knives to night vision goggles and I would summarize the game as simply outstanding.  I am especially fond of sail boats and look forward to more interaction between them and the weather.  Chef's kiss for decks icing over in a snow storm.

I bought the game and this is my first time I've played it... what a masterpiece! I want to see this game evolve even further with future updates. Great job, developers! Keep it up!

love the game, i bet it would be good with friends sadly though my friends don't have it, but i love the game play and features, so many opportunity's in this game and a lot of in depth mechanics

Honestly, a near perfect game. the only thing that'd make it perfect is friends that have enough attention span to learn to play it lol

Fantastic survival game! I love the look and feel of everything, from the environment and weather, to the deep level of detail of making things. I also like the DEV's ethics. No ads, no selling data, no pay to win, independent, lots of mods if you like, and constant updates. Game is priced super competitively. I truly cannot find any fault, which is rare for modern games. Well done to the team! If you're curious about it as I was, just buy the game, you wont be disappointed!

I absolutely adore this game. I find it incredibly endearing and love the complexity of the mechanics. I hope they add more detailed and interactable mechanics to the point of obtuseness. I feel like it gives the world a lot of interactibility.

I love that the game is actually difficult and takes time, it feels more natural and gives the game a sort of relaxed flavour that you can't get in modern games. I will write a longer review once I'm through with most of the vanilla base game, but nevertheless, this game is a game of passion and brilliance.

All my friends have bought the game and every day I SOB playing this game its soo good. Its like staring at the every piece of art stored in every museum condensed into one beautiful game. I play 16 hours a day (8 hours for sleep so i can enjoy the game in a maximum state of mind) I CANNOT get ENOUGH. I have liquidated my 401k to give to a team of inventors and coders to create a nueral interface so i can upload myself into the game, when this happens even though I haven't heard from them in a few months will be a JOYOUS DAY of CELEBRATION!

This game is amazing!!!!! I have been playing almost non stop of course gotta take care of myself lol haven't gone that far haha!! But yeah I'm very happy with my purchase just the other night I got my first wolf and Bear kills and for my first bear kill it dropped a skin with the head still attached so safe to say in honor of the Mighty as I deemed her Yogi Bear I will have her as a trophy rug for my home!!! she attacked me out by my farm which is practically on my front porch lol!!! So its been a blast and a half thus far haven't done multiplayer yet nor joined the discord but do very much plan to!! This is an AMAZING game I definitely recommend it very good price as well!!! Now if you'll please excuse me I've gotta go die in a hole!!!! [that's become my catchphrase in this game BTY not actually gonna die in a hole lol]

Fantastic

This game truly hit the nail on the head when it comes to hardcore survival mixed with realism and eldritch horror.

Building, metalworking, farming, cooking are so nicely done yet logical at the same time. Mechanical power is what made me say the game is peak cinema. I had to look into gear ratios and understand how a gearbox works in order to make the windmill power multiple machines for our village automation. 

The game is a true gem, and with more updates coming I can already see existing features just becoming even greater.

10/10 I would buy it again with no sweat.
