the game's aesthetics are very good, the gameplay is realistic and enjoyable, but there isn't that much to do after the main progression right now

The games great. No notes. The server hosting is archaic. You claim to be doing soo fine financially, and use that as an excuse for not putting your game on steam. So I'm forced to either shill over 12 bucks a month, or use Upnp which sucks absolute nuts.

[Edit: Dev response from Tyron, 11/5/2025]
There are 3rd party hosting providers for less than 12 bucks a month - https://wiki.vintagestory.at/List_of_server_hosting_providers
Hamachi should also work just fine to host a server. Our game does not ship with a launcher. Account setup is required only once if you do not log in elsewhere, as your local login session does not expire.

[Edit Brayg] Bro still think we use hamachi in the big 2025. Youre right about the launcher (obv you'd be right) that was my bad I hadn't relaunched the game until after i left the review.

WAS SOLL DAS ???

Vintage story is an admirable technical achievement in diegetic game play with an engaging first two ages that are not only novel but also immersive. Unfortunately the game has to chase these high for the remainder of its length as tedium set in as the player is forced to fumble around to enter the copper age, block by having to restart the game because of the time waste the default generation is.

To start metal work you need to find 60 copper nuggets (for 2 different picks and a hammer) (which takes approximately 15+ copper zones depending on how rich the nugget spawn is) this task is so tedious and so annoying it becomes a filter for the player who is forced between looking at rocks for hours and hours on end or being gaslit into thinking they’re lagging in single player because panning may or may not have a random duration (but has a set sound effect which is shorter than the max panning duration), not to mention this too will be a task you have to sit for hours to even get the 20 nuggets needed for a single ingot.

Unfortunately metal is a key resource in progression for the remaining ages so this riga ma roll of looking for tiny rocks while avoiding heat seeking bears, wolves and inventory filling seems to be a load bearing part of the game.

And I don’t think ore procurement is the only issue. Wax, salt, flax and who knows what else is so dependant on world generation that it could save or loose the player tens of hours across a play through assuming they even know where to look.

Even food has this issue. Locating, Growing and hunting for food takes time both to collect and to replenish. worlds that have less food spawns due to unlucky biome distribution can and will lead to a lack of food on one world and another world having enough food to support a 12 course feast by day 3.

The player being forced into the world gen struggle funnel for every path of progression leads to the game feeling uncomfortably linear and made me feel as if I was marking off a checklist of chores lead me to felt burnt out on motivation to continue a play session or worse tempt me into deleting the world. I shouldn’t feel the urge to restart and re balance the game myself every time I’m inconvenienced, but sometimes I feel the game pushing me in this direction. and I'm basically cheating even though all I'm doing is trying to bypass bad world gen and a game that clearly lacks the checks and balances to make a worlds with consistent difficulty even when using the same world gen parameters.

TLDR: world gen too inconsistent leading to widely different difficulty experiences even when using the same settings, Combined with the need to constantly search for hyper specific, uncommon items in sometime comically large quantities leads to a frustrating experience.

Website sucks and the sign up process is terrible. you have to make two accounts. one for the website and one for the game itself.

The survival aspect is AMAZING!!! The only thing holding my review back from being 5 stars is the combat.

Combat in this game doesn't feel right. Armor feels WAAAAY heavier than it should be. Plate armor slows your character down twice as much, which is a MASSIVE downside. Sure, plate armor in medieval times was cumbersome, but it was more exhausting rather than causing a significant loss of speed.

Shields in this game feel like you're not even using them. They "auto-block" attacks whenever you're fighting, which, to me, makes it feel like I'm gambling rather than actually fighting.

Overall, the combat feels pretty bland and watered down. People say, "There's no need for combat in a survival game," but COMBAT is what makes survival. You're fighting for your life, and you need to do whatever it takes to defend your land from enemies or animals. If combat isn't a main focus, then what's the point of having it in the first place? As it stands, all I see in Vintage Story is just a "farming simulator."

All this game needs is a combat overhaul because let me say this:

This game has the potential to be better than Minecraft if they take what makes Minecraft fun and make those mechanics even better. And COMBAT is one of those.

While the game is ultra cool in the first few hours, it gets stale super quick. Once you realize there is no incentive to do anything, it boils down to just "minecraft with extra steps" I do understand that this is a sandbox game and that apparently that means you need to set your own goals, but that is stupid. If there are enemies in a game they should pose an actual threat. You're totally save in a 1x2 whole during the nights. No need to get fancy building materials either, dirt will suffice. The game is advertised to put more realism into the game but ultimately fails to implement a reasoning behind all of it's items. Why would I build medieval style walls and cities, when a hole in the ground is just as save? Why would I search for materials, hours on end, when a flint spear is enough? Why would I explore the world when there is nothing to see aside from lore text and ruins that hold items I can get anywhere else? Why would I bother with animal breeding and cooking, when berries and meat do the job? Why would I care about stat boosts via balanced diet when there's no threat? Why would I bother fighting Drifters, when all they drop is Flax fiber?

The idea of the game is great, execution is very poor as of now. Who knows, maybe in a couple of years it will be great, but I doubt that. Probably just going to be minecraft with extra steps.

If you make survival mechanics, enemies and story, do them right... Right now there's no reason to do anything whatsoever aside from Collecting/Building just for the sake of it. We already got minecraft for that tho.

Until this godawful website gets a complete and total revamp AND whatever service they are using to deliver keys gets completely scrapped, DO NOT BUY ON THIS WEBSITE.

There is a chance you will just flat out not receive your key, for multiple days, all the while support is showing absolutely zero signs of life, leaving you with no game but the money is locked up in limbo. You cannot even issue a refund and then purchase from Humble, where you will actually get your key, because as I said, support is showing absolutely zero signs of life.

Either buy on Humble (or Itch, when that gets added back) where they wont just flat out scam you lol.

I would love to tell you how great this game is, but I literally cannot play it.

I bought the key, but there are no links anywhere to download the game itself.

[Edit: Dev response from Tyron, 8/26/2025]
As stated in multiple places on our sites - if you did not receive the game key, please contact us using our contact form at the bottom or our support ticket system. More often than not, emails do not get delivered due to a mistyped email address.

!!!!!STAY CLEAR OF THIS COMPANY!!!!!

Unfortunately this has been the worst company i have ever had to deal with. I watched countless videos of this game and was excited to try the game, however after making my purchase i was sent multiple emails all at once wanting me to make two accounts for this game not just the usual one. I didnt understand why they would do that yet I created an account on both with the same email and same passwords. After spending 20 Euros for the game (which you can only buy through their own website) i downloaded the game and was prompted with a log in. I attempted to log in and was told my password was incorrect. I reached out for support and explained this all very clearly to the staff yet I was just sent two links to change my passwords. I did this changed both passwords and ensured both were the same once again. I loaded the game and was once again unable to login to my account. Ive had no resolve and have had to ask for a refund as i am physically unable to play this game and the company didnt want to look into their own database and realise there was something wrong on their end. i didnt want to ask for a refund for this game and i still havent been provided said refund yet this company has been the most impossible company to ever deal with.

!!!!!STAY CLEAR OF THIS COMPANY!!!!!

[Response from @Tyron, Feb 2, 2025]: Sorry to hear that you were having troubles getting your login sorted out. We have thousands of users successfully logging in every day without issue, so I am not sure why were not able to log in. I would recommend using a password manager and copy&pasting your password into the game client during login so you cannot accidentally mistype.

Never liked Minecraft.  I'm not sure why I thought I'd like this.  Just not my cup of tea.  Forced first-person view is a game killer for me.

Well this sucks. I really love survival games, but the genre that at one point was full a games (mostly slop though), now is surprisingly dry. And to get away from yearly one week Minecraft tradition me and the boys decided to try vintage story.

The dedicated server set up was quick and straightforward, the game itself looks nice, better than a usual combination of Minecraft shaders and most importantly it has it's own style which is very nice.
But from the start of the game and during the whole session I felt like the game was actively hostile towards me as a player. I like to play games blind, without looking up any guides, secrets etc. And in game where whenever you look at a block it tells you what it is and shows all the binds how hard could it be? Turns out, quite hard, while my 10+ years old knowledge of TFC that is still somehow is in my brain helped me create first set of tools quite quickly, anything after anything but quick and painless. Trying to craft firestarter for about 10 minutes while being attack by a spider looking... thing, I quickly understood that there is no way I can play the game without an included guidebook. Well, so far for not looking up guides, but it doesn't mean that the game cannot be enjoyed? Well, in this game you start with 10 inventory slots, and while you can craft simple baskets to increase it 22 (which I needed to be told to do so by a friend, because it is only explained in the tutorial that you need to start yourself in a guide book, after it teaches you to use WASD, shift and cntrl), it is still less than Minecraft's 36. And when Minecraft for the last couple of updates tried to remedy at least a little, the issue with inventory management (which lets be fair didn't help much) this game went full in with 27 different stone variants, 31 different grass and crop types and everything in-between, and don't forget substantially lower stack sizes. Thankfully, you can just place stuff on the ground until you get to a proper storage right? At this point we come to the next, and imo, the biggest issue with the game - inconsistency. There is no consistency in interactions with items. Blocks take one block space, you can just place them; sticks\firewood? you can shift+RMB to place the whole stack in place of one block, cool; dry grass? nah sorry you can only start a campfire with one piece; What about stones? Well, you can place them with shift+RMB, unless you can craft tools with them, then shift+RMB will craft a tool head, but you can still place them on a ground with ctrl+shift+RMB, unless it is flint, flint stays in your inventory; Also seeds, you can only place 4 at one block space, not the whole stack.
Even with a couple of hours of playtime I can go on and on about how interactions with the world are just unintuitive and inconsistent most of the time. For example you cannot pick up items with anything equipped in your hand, unless it is the items you try to pick up (sometimes), even though you have inventory space, and tooltip says you to do so (to be fair it shows an empty hand, but like, why?). This just adds to the feeling that games just doesn't want to be played. And the game itself is challenging I would say (in Minecraft terms), which is cool, but challenge shouldn't come from inventory management and fights with UI.
The other thing that was quite hard to wrap my head around is the crafting system. Not only handbook contains every single recipe in the game on a separate page (it is basically way worse version of NEI\JEI or whatever) and not only we inherited Minecraft's terrible crafting grid without gradually introducing recipes like MC does. We also allowed multiple items in the same recipe in the same slot. At this point just make it simple X of Y + A of B makes C, how many recipes there are that you felt the need to introduce this to already terrible system I cannot understand.
The last thing I wanted to mention is "Early Access" label. The game is 10 years in development, insanely scope creeped, and there is still no concrete roadmap (it says so on the roadmap page) or any, at least vague, release window. I feel like game is turning into a Project Zomboid EA title, instead of proper EA title that knows the scope of the development and what game it wants to be. In current state, the game is just a prototype with a lot of funny features.

And while I left a negative review, I encourage anyone to just try the game for yourself, the refund policy is definitely generous, and without it I would even try it. Big props to devs for the policy. But in my opinion, this is badly balanced Minecraft modpack for 25 bucks.

Zaph42nd

A game about getting mauled to death by bears, wolves, and horrors beyond comprehension, falling into holes, and starving to death; 10/10 would die again. But in all seriousness, excellent game and I love that VS continues to expand its mechanical depth while retaining its high configurability and modding potential.
