Steel Before EOY Challenge - Default Month Length

Love and Barley

Recommended Posts

Wanted to start a fresh single player too relive the early ages with all of the new changes and gave myself the challenge of trying to get to using Steel as soon as possible, ideally before the end of the 1st year.

Results:

  • See the screen below but I was able to do this by December 2 of the first year :) . Made with Quartz/Bauxite/Olivine
  • I died maybe 3 or 4 times so next time I'll try to do the same without dying.
  • I also never killed an animal - not domesticated or wild (this is just how I play). Never ended up having leather as a result though.
  • Never found Salt/Halite, Meteor Iron, Sulfur, Titanium, Any Gems (No Diamonds, Peridot, Emerald, Sapphire, etc). Found most materials needed to get to steel above level 70.

Also I have to say from the replay that  @Tyron, @Saraty, @Red Ram / the dev team have done so much incredible work since my first playthrough. Thank you!

Also AMA it was fun

it is quite hard to last to steel while not killing a single wolf or a bear. not a simple task...

BTW - leathers still can be acquired by taking it from animals killed by wolves/bears/foxes. The challenge is to find these corpses or create traps for both predators and victims.

Thanks @BenLi- I avoided forests at night so the wolves would usually be sleeping when I passed. Bears were all over! Had to listen for their roar and just book it when I heard them.

There were a lot of hunted rabbits I would collect the pelts from (or try) but I didn't make a goal of it so I never got enough. I thought I saw a dead bighorn (could have been sleeping) but I ran away fast just in case there was a bear nearby. Never saw a wolf kill a bighorn!

Started a second attempt a few days ago - ended up very different but I'm on track, just found magnetite in June and will have at least Baux & Quartz. Shouldn't be too hard to find olivine before end of year and I have a lot of Titanium readings nearby.

Strangely have not found a block of Terra Petra this time so way behind on automation / flax.

Also playing as a Blackguard for the first time and it is devastating every time I try to harvest something and it fails. Being ravenous, and fumbling the harvest of mushrooms is a painful combination! Fortunately there's always more berries.

you cannot make tier3 refractory bricks before you make tier1/2 and make at least one portion of steel - all because ilmenite/titanium cannot be crushed with iron caps.

Also olivine is not a must - tier1 is perfectly OK for first steel ingots stack.

What you need is the automation of pulverizer. This IS a must for steel. Probably buying the linen from traders may help. Any type of linen' stitch works with sails.

About to post my victory screen but this time I just did tier 1 because I never came across the olivine.

I thought I was smart and knew I could still harvest ilmenite with a bomb -- but realized to your point I could not crush it!

To your point on automation, the lack of terra petra was the most slowing this this time around, as well as not finding a fat trader (since I don't kill wolves, etc). I started tracking bears and harvesting their kills but searching for a half dozen traders was easier. Since winter approached I ended up buying some linen from traders but just for the 2nd windmill.

This time around I fired steel by November 6 of the first year. (Excuse my silly outfit) Used Tier 1 Bricks instead of 2 because I didn't come across Olivine.

I never killed an animal, and died only once* (got killed multiple times at the respawn immediately after that first death since it was full of wolves but I'm counting that all as one time lol).

I made a cool fort design this time for my base (screen belows) on top of some kind of ruin and traveled to find a lot of traders

Did my own "speedrun" not concentrating on steel but rather on fast development.

Default days per month. 9?

By 9May had the bronze, skipping the copper anvil.

By 2Jun had the iron.

By 5Sep had the windmill ready to crush stuff/helve blooms/grind.

By the end of November had enough food for the winter(grains/veggies/honey for fruits bar), bees, longhorns, chickens, descent winter house, enough fuel, fur cloths etc.

Also planted ~6 fruit trees.
