In a way, planters are troughs themselves, but it's a pity we cannot use them to store food for animals. I imagine that's how people living in certain more backward societies would do it in place of using wood 2

Clay troughs of the same size as their wooden counterparts would be heavier, and as such, I expect they should be smaller to compensate for their density per volume unit.Â
