Any fix? It look like people have been having this problem for like two years... I just bought and was excited to play but can't get it to work. I got this specifically because it said it ran on mac so this is kind of a bummer..

Okay I figured it out by extracting the contents off the app and running the exec file in the terminal. You need to install a microsoft framework for playing games that does not come native on Macs. It's called the .NET 7.0 runtime, and you can copy paste the link from the terminal window for the version you need. Happy playing!

Is there a fix for this yet? I just downloaded the game and followed all the steps to manual start and it's still not opening...

You need to down load the supporting software on the download screen :) I just tried it and that fixed it

How? I am completely lost since I have never tried anything like this before

I had the same problem at first. Then I read the bit about the runtime file. They actually link to it on the page where you downloaded the game itself. Vanthrax mentioned it above, but now it's .net 8 instead of .net 7.

The game uses .net 8 now??? Thought .net 8 would be added at 1.21, it even says so in the update notes. hmmm

Yeah, I was lazy in my answer, sorry. Just noted that the links page referenced .net 8 rather than .net 7.

It’s 7 for the stable release, still (or at least it works with 7, since I’ve not upgraded it).

This is how I understood it as well but toms comment and the download page make me think otherwise now. I find it strange that they never explicitly mentioned switching versions for the current stable edition. The release for 1.21 mentions the switch in the update notes but nothing for 1.20, unless I missed something else.

No worries, my eyes are broken or lazy, I swear it said .net7 when I downloaded but yeah, just checked and see that it does refer to .net 8. Wiki has yet to be updated.

I'm having the same issues. I've installed what I believe to be the correct .net 8 runtime, and I just get the 'open and close' of the app icon.
Can't run it in terminal.

There I get the message:

You must install .NET to run this application.

App: /Applications/vintagestory.app/Vintagestory
Architecture: x64
App host version: 8.0.16
.NET location: Not found

Download the .NET runtime:
https://aka.ms/dotnet-core-applaunch?missing_runtime=true&arch=x64&rid=osx-x64&os=osx.15&apphost_version=8.0.16

Which I don't understand because all I've done all evening is install, uninstall and reinstall .net...

You don't want the latest version for VS, you'll want .NET 8 specifically. Specifically specifically the x64 version for macOS, NOT the ARM/Apple Silicon version.
