Is there a way to have other players show on the map globally?

Running a server for my friend and I, we keep losing each other because we only appear on each others' map if we are within ~50 blocks of each other, very annoying. Are there any config options to change this? And maybe change our map icon colors while we're at it?

I agree with the question, I play in single player shared with a friend and I would also like to know if there is a way to always make ourselves visible on the map Thanks

What I really want to know is how to see public servers, since It's seems like i can't connect to master server
