I had the game only a short time before updating from 1.18 to 1.19.  Prior to the update I was growing soybeans for livestock fodder.  Since the update I can place the soybeans in a large trough, but it the tooltip will say it is "unsuitable."  I've offered it to both wild pigs and bighorn sheep.  Neither will eat them.  As a consequence I have far more soybeans than needed for Seraph consumption and a shortage of fodder for my animals.  I've been watching the changelogs and haven't seen any mention of this.

The animal feed code was reshuffled quite a bit for 1.19. Based on the .json files, pigs eat protein. Peanuts should count. Raw soy doesn't count as protein, but pickled soy might work (for pigs, not sheep), if you can place it in a trough.

I do find pretty weird that you would grow soybeans as animal feed. It's a K-crop and competes with flax. I'm drowning in flax grain (given its low nutrition, it's just bad for Seraph consumption) and could feed a huge army of animals.

Soybeans were one of the earliest seeds I found.  In fact, wild crops were slow to generate in the area I settled, so I only had pumpkins and soybeans for most of a growing season.

When I looked soybeans up in the Wiki I found this:

Quote

Soybeans may be put in a large trough to breed livestock. Pigs and sheep consider soybeans a treat.

Based on this, I began growing soybeans right away, before obtaining any livestock thinking I would be well prepared.

While some areas can be very low on seeds, they are overall pretty abundant. In my first summer (in my current 1.19 game), I was growing 400 flax plants (3 x 128 plant fields with flax). I explored (as in revealed the map and checked interesting looking stuff) around a 5000x5000 area.

Your animals won't die, if you don't feed them. They just don't breed.

My animals and inventory will be fine.  I'm mainly trying to get a definitive answer so I know whether this is a bug that should be reported or a Wiki entry that needs updating or clarifying.  I switched from the 1.18 version to 1.19 not long after I purchased the game, but I believe the soybeans were working as described in the Wiki entry prior to my switching.  I didn't have the foresight to take notes so I'm not 100% certain.  I am pickling a batch of soybeans to test, but since I have tested pickled carrots and found they can't be placed in a trough I don't expect it to work.
