How do you find the y level where you character is currently standing

I've been trying to figure out the best way to strip mine and think I understand how the ores spawn but I can't figure out what the y level where my character is standing

Ctrl + V to turn on/off coordinates.  It's also on the "Interface" tab in the settings menu.
