In retrospect, I now understand you need a minimum of 1 vegetable to cook soup. I was attempting to create a soup with 1 meat and water, but I couldn't remember how much water was required. I added water up to 1 liter, nothing. 2 liters, 3 liters, 4 liters. Very frustrated at this point. May I suggest, when you've got a cooking pot with 1 meat and 1 liter of water, you display a little message saying something like "Will create 1 [meat] soup. Soups require at least one vegetable," so at least the player knows at that point that 1 liter is the correct amount of water and giving the helpful reminder about vegetables? Little things like this would help a player that doesn't want to consult a website for every tiny detail.

I learned to make the soup from the handbook, while the 1L would be a nice edition; using the handbook is very essential and should not be ignored. The handbook is not a cheat in fact; without it you'll be hard pressed to advance simply just looking at the metal alloy formulas. I am constantly consulting it mainly for the meal recipes as I tend to have a few days between play sessions.

From a development standpoint, the message would be nice from a player perspective but, how would you even code that? You would have to guess what the player wanted to make and that's just a guess. They might see those same ingredients and then assume you wanted to make meat stew instead. Frankly, I use those display messages to go "it makes a meal" and half the time I don't bother to read the full message for what meal it's making. Just look at the meal making guide as a simple cookbook, it gives the jist but not much else. Just move the ingredients around till it resembles the base recipe shown.

You need at least two slots of vegetables to every liter of water. The last slot can be another vegetable, an egg, or meat.

What? That isn’t right, you should only need 1 vegetable per liter of water. Granted, there’s no real reason to do that if you’re not using one of the more nutritious vegetables, but you should be able to.

Are you using saltwater? That might be your issue.
